For Those Too Young to Remember

Edwards was able to improve a poor art grade, not everyone in the RMK era were Rhode scholars either.
improving poor art grade = had to actually show up at class twice a week. There were several reasons Jay left after his soph yr. He had a great season, star wasn't going to get any brighter. But word was he was not going to make it thru another year at school. Also heard he had hundreds of unpaid parking tickets. Jay had an incredible season but soon turned into persona non grata almost as soon as he left.

Always wondered what the 90-91 season would have looked like with Sr Edwards, Junior Eric Anderson and Sophs Calbert, Graham, etc. Imagine trying to cover Jay and Calbert on the court together. And even more if Funderburke couuld have stuck around. Loaded team.

I heard JE was fond of the white stuff and wanted to get to the NBA so he could afford it. Not sure what happened to him after that.
he had some drug issues and hurt his knee that got worse over time. But he had a hard time making the right choices, even with all the natural talent. I think they even snuck him into a real rehab clinic early in his soph yr to try and get him cleaned up. Everything just came too easily for Jay when he was young. Relied on talent and not determination.

He and Calbert could have played together for 2 yrs. Imagine trying to come up with a defense to stop those two on the court at the same time?
When you look back.....Knight could easily have had 5 or 6 NCs. Steve Downings blocking foul/Waltons 5th, May's arm, Henderson's knee, TV Fuggin' Teddy, Landon Turner, Jay Edwards leaving early. Letting Larry Bird get off campus. Damn.

1990-91 line up coulda woulda shoulda...

Starters
Edwards
Cheaney
E Anderson
G.Graham
L Funderburke

Off bench:
D Bailey
T Leary
L Jones
Meeks
C Reynolds
M Nover
P Graham

As it is the team finished 29-5/15-3 and finished the regular season ranked #3. They lost a #1 seed to OSU by losing that epic 2OT loss in Columbus late Feb. (OSU was ranked #2 and IU #4 at the time). OSU and IU tied for the B1G at 15-3 but OSU swept IU so we got stuck with a 2 seed with a record of 27-4 and #3 ranking.

If Edwards AND Funderburke are on that team, IU hangs a banner in 1991, and flirts with an undefeated season.

And 2 years in a row undefeated seasons.
Great team play for many years under RMK

yep all programs can make simliar claims for 1, maybe 2 seasons, but in IU's case, there are many years combined (75, 83, 91, 92, 93) where at least 1-2 more banners should have been the result. Injuries, Jay leaving early,...or Ted F'n Valentine got in the way.

Kitchel's late season back injury derailed 82-83 when IU was in the top 5 most of the season. When his season ended Kitchel was (I believe) the B1G leading scorer (it was between him and Keith Edmonson from Purdue).

We hang a banner if Teddy Valentine isn't 'reffing' a certain game.

And another if Alan Henderson doesn't blow out a knee late.

So yeah, agree with at least the years posted above.

agreed...but to be fair, the one that hurts the most was '75. That team pretty much tore the shit out of everyone they played. Avg win margin 23 pts for the entire season including B1G games. Started the B1G season in East Lansing..and beat MSU 107-55.

May's injury cost us a banner, without any doubt.

The 2002 team also, if he had been here and had not been under continual harassment by the administration.

75 would have been a Natty, obviously.

I think Hendu's knee injury year likely would have been as well.

Edwards sticking it out for 4 years would have been very interesting, for sure. But would it have stunted the early growth of guys like G. Graham, Bailey, Reynolds? Edwards was a bad ass offensively...and could defend...but defensively, he wasn't like Graham and Reynolds became pretty early in their careers.

Another costly one-Eric Montross’ dad having a spat over Landon Turner’s Ford Motor Co settlement amount.

yeah I thought about that. who knows...maybe Jay gets the entire team hooked on blow,.....you never know what you'll never know.

Chris R could defend but was not at offensive player at all. Jay was a monster on offense. Running him and Calbert through the motion offense and off of one Sloan screen after another.....a nightmare to defend. Both of them were pure shooters with range and made for the RMK motion/screen offense,.
Greg Graham, on the other hand, might have been the best offense/defense combo player on the 93 squad. And that's a stretch when you're teammate is National POY and all time B1G scorer. GG really developed while at IU.

AND of course, who broke May's arm - F****** PUkes!

Like I need another reason to hate them!!

Don't want to start a "get off my lawn" rant, but a shot of nostalgia about an era long ago to elicit a wry smile. Right up there with the Alford calendar scandal.

Jay Edwards Suspension
Jay's freshmen year was my sophomore year. I remember seeing him in the parking lot of an apartment complex and driving away thinking, that can't be good.

My roommate, Jay and Ken Snow (soccer star) were allegedly out drinking until like 5am at least one of those Saturday games where he had a winning shot. Amazing what he could do hungover.

He also got some very bad advice from a family member

We likely would have but the sad thing is if we had stayed a great program we would have forgotten about that game because we would of had many other chances. But we remember it because that was really the last year we ever had a chance to win it other than the one davis year.

I played college soccer believe it or not. Now it was D2 but one of the last games of the year i was out drinking til 3am with an 11am game. I still played fine but thats what you can do when you are 20. Its not really that uncommon.

Ken Snow (RIP) set the single season goal record and was All American in 87---you are correct.
