Five Stars

And also likely he would have taken more. RMK hated the 3 but he knew he had the best 3 pt shooter in the game and Alford would have made sure he was behind the line on a lot of shots that may show him being inside when it wasnt there if that makes sense? Alford was way to smart to take shots a foot or 2 inside if the line were actually there. Both were great though
Alford hit 44% from the 2 his senior year but 53% from the three. He would have made a bunch of threes in the prior three seasons.

Agree that Knight hated the three, and he voiced that opinion, so it is ironic that Alford hit 7 three pointers in the Natty vs Syracuse. We probably would not have won that National Championship if the three had not been introduced that season.

Nowadays it is hard to say where a consensus line is drawn for 5-star, but since Romeo and Lander were both highly rated, it might be best to just wait and see how good these new guys are.
Romeo and Lander don’t belong in the same sentence. Romeo was injured much of the season, was mired in the uninspiring clutches of Archieball, but still absolutely blew away what freshmen typically do:

Played in and started 32 games...top freshman scorer in the Big Ten and IU leader at 16.5 ppg... had 3rd highest scoring average among major college freshmen...second on the team with 5.4 rebounds and 26 blocks, 3rd in assists with 75 and 4th in steals with 25.

calbert wasn't close to a 5 star
I definitely recall reading about Calbert being rated as a top 50 high school recruit before he set foot on campus. Now, admittedly, that might have been AFTER he committed, but he wasn't a complete unknown or anything, especially during his senior year.

There's no question, however, that Funderburke, Pat Graham, Greg Graham and Reynolds were considered the jewels of that '89 class.

Funderburke was considered the Crown jewel of the class right up until they started practicing in ernest... Few average fans (or sports writers)?were aware of Calberts talents (outside of the Evansville area)...

I remember watching Funderburke and the rest of that class play in some sort of exhibition game at Assembly Hall... Funderburke looked like a cross between Koby and the current Lakers Chinese bot from Cleveland (in terms of pure talent); he was a Man among boys, fastest guy on the team and strongest too... and then.., he disappeared..., resurfacing later as an athletic center with just above average ability (at "the" o $ u)...

Things are rarely what they seem when you're looking at incoming freshmen, what's between their ears is the immeasurable that makes all the difference in the final analysis...

Butttt….all people saw was…he stood around. Those are solid stats for even veteran players. Never understood the Romeo hate.
