Fan who went on the field and was decked by a FB player has filed a police report

One would think that being illegally on the field would void his complaint, but IANAL.
I’m not debating whether or not the protester deserved to get hit, but it wasn’t the player’s job to do so. The stadium is not the player’s property and the protester posed no threat to the gigantic guy wearing pads.

How was anyone to know that he was unarmed?

We should be clear what a police report is. It's someone going to the police and saying "This happened" and filling out some papers and the police maybe looking into it. It does not mean that it is at all likely that the police will find any reason to refer the investigation to prosecutors. The most likely outcome is that the police end up saying the bureaucratic equivalent of, "Yeah, we looked into it, and it happened, and this guy's lucky his neck didn't get snapped. Moving on."

Mike Curtis was a very tough linebacker for the Baltimore Colts in the 1970s. He dealt with a fan running onto the field. I am sure the guy never did it again

It is probably what his lawyer told him to do so they can sue. The police will take a report on it (surprised there already isn't one) and they will be done with it.

He and whomever is representing him is looking for a payday. Nothing more or less.

Filing is simply a prerequisite to a civil law suit. This is in CA where you would think a liberal trespassing protester would be paid handsomely...but wait... the liberal hero criminal is white...the player is black.

This is going to be very confusing.
