Back after Signing day, I had high hopes for improved play at WR. IU had gotten Marqui Hawkins and Camion Patrick and things were looking up. Well, Patrick fell victim to Finite Math and Hawkins is still adjusting to college football as a wideout. IU signed 3 terrific freshmen. One broke his collar bone, and two are playing as freshmen play. Not much. I suspect some folks expected them to be Jerry Rice from practice one.
Right now IU is missing vertical passing badly. Jones did some real damage against the leaner part of the schedule. But slowed down with an ankle and poor field conditions, he struggled to get open against the OSU backfield. Note: A lot of people not named Jared Abbredaris have and will struggle against OSU.
After a good start to the year, Simmie Cobbs reverted to freshman Simmie at some key spots during the game and dropped potentially big plays.
Going into PSU and their tough defense, IU is a bit behind the 8 ball if Howard can't go and Nate isn't 100 percent. IU has to be able to threaten with the pass against PSU, MSU, Iowa to be sure.
IU has shown a lot this yr and has a lot left to show. Someone is going to have to get free off press coverage and convert 3rd down.
