explain the short kickoffs please

It's cold and hard to kick the ball high and deep. So both teams are pooching it to limit returns.

Nope.

Figure they're taking a chance on a mishandle since anything inside the 25 is a dead ball.

Might as well kick it to the 26 and hope for mayhem.

Loved it!! Best Kick off strategy all year. Only one got returned past the 27, I believe. Considering how poorly the KO coverage was vs Iowa and probably lost PSU game, would much rather see the pooched kicks, that were mostly fair catches between the 20-27.

If you can't kick it through the end zone consistently, this is the best strategy. It worked.

Still managed, somehow, to allow a return to about our 30 yard line. That being said, I agree with this as a way to hide our porous coverage on kickoffs.

It made sense for us to pooch kick it. They have an explosive returner and we suck as kick off coverage.

It didn't make sense for them to do it. We always fair catch it which would put us on the 25. With the pooch kicks we were always starting past that.
