If you go to sports-reference and look under each teams roster, you'll see an experience rating. The rating is based on minutes played, so it's a pretty good measure of a teams experience level.

I update them weekly on my own spreadsheet, which only accounts for the six major conferences.

Anyway, I thought that it's noteworthy that our December slugfests have been against some of the most experienced teams in major college hoops. Penn State is the lone exception (owning an experience rating similar to IU's), but that game was in Happy Valley as a 2 point underdog to a team coming off a victory over highly ranked Virginia Tech.

Northwestern is tied for #8 of 75 in experience rating
Louisville #1 of 75
Butler #8 of 75

Even though there may be plenty to nit-pick about, coming out on top in these battles vs very experienced teams might be being under appreciated by some.

Also, Butler's Offensive Efficiency was .563 points per possession over the last 10 minutes of Saturday's game!!

It is interesting to rank teams by experience and more significant for teams not associated with being a top 25 program. It can be useful to predict what mid major will be knocking off power 5 conference teams and potentially making a strong run into March.

Experience is good but not a guarantee of performance. It is performance that matters. You can get that performance in a lot of ways with varying levels of experience. A 5 star that is performing as their rating would suggest can be equivalent to a 4 star in year 2-4 or a good 3 star in year 3-4. Some talent will peak early, late, or never materialize.
