When IU first toyed with the idea of switching to a 3/4 defense two seasons ago, the then DC, Doug Mallory stated: "We don't have the personnel to play a 3/4". Well, for a variety of reasons, IU made the switch with a variety of results. IU's defense is a single gap 3/4 that utilizes a lot of slanting and stunts as opposed to simply taking on blockers and freeing up linebackers.
IU's bulk didn't get blown back into the linebackers, or off the LOS, but quickness and pass rush were spotty at best. They tend to hold up better against the run than as pass rushers. Darius Latham came to Iu to play defense and I'm sure glad he did. But Darius looks more like a ten yr NFL offensive lineman than an NFL DE. Nate Hoff is a tough, relentless and strong at the point of attack.
But it seems to me that in it's last two recruiting classes and with the type of kids they are recruiting are quicker and athletic and seem to fit the slanting, attacking, fluid defender style that goes with this defense.
I believe the strength of the defense lies with it's linebackers athleticism and depth. They are generally still young, but there is talent at a position that has traditionally struggled to field a Big Ten level linebacking corps.
Two seasons ago, IU's defense was just awful. Last season there was improvement but they still struggled to get off the field. I look for more gradual improvement this season, but I think the next level of defense will come with the next generation of players.
