event in 2010. We had four eight-man teams and I was our team's captain. It was on October 2 and October 3.

The four captains got together a few evenings earlier and chose teams. The players got to use their golf handicaps, so I chose a couple with rather high handicaps.

We made it to the championship round and I strategically put our highest handicapper against the opposing team's best golfer. Why? Because the single-digit handicapper hated to give strokes to opponents.

We won five of the eight final matches and the Ryder Cup as a result. I just finished looking at our team photo and I was one of the younger golfers on our team.

Ironically, I won the most money I've ever won in golf three weeks earlier. That was when we had our annual 18-hole group tournament with 28 golfers. My playing partner and I won the pot ($2,800) and split it with each other afterward.

That was a great year of golf for me as a result. I hope our US Ryder Cup team wins it this year!

A buddy left Monday for Vegas with a bunch of guys from his club. They'll play Tuesday - Thursday and then lose all their money in a drunken betting frenzy at the sportsbook Friday - Sunday.

The first time I went to Las Vegas was in the 1980s when I was branch manager of Rex Business Machines' Columbus office. It was a trade show and we got to see the latest and greatest of the new models. Fortunately, we also got to play golf and gamble.

We had some new sales reps attending it because they were over quota for the year. I warned them to be careful regarding their behavior because owners and management individuals were with us. One of them apparently didn't listen to me. He maxed out his credit card gambling, drank heavily and missed some training we had the next morning. Needless to say, he got fired after we returned to Indiana a few days later.

I have never been a big gambler. I don't mind putting my $100 in the pot when we have our annual golf event, but I don't like to press or be pressed by the opponents when we are playing a match. In other words, I like to know what my maximum expenditures will be before the round.

When I was about 13, my friends and some high school golfers had a similar mini tourney over four days. I still remember how much fun we had with small bets here and there. But our total pot was closer to $100 and some Cheetos.
