Indiana's five best players are Ballo, Reneau, Mgbako, Galloway, and Rice. These five rate as the most valuable players on a per-possession basis according to Bayesian Performance Rating, which accounts for individual stats, on-court impact, and historical stats.

This five of Rice, Mgbako, Galloway, Reneau, and Ballo should be Indiana's starting lineup. The group is predicted to be IU's best lineup based on predicted efficiency, which accounts for the individual player skills, along with how a lineup has performed on the court together, without overreacting to small sample sizes. Here are all of Indiana's lineups sorted by predicted efficiency (Pred Team Eff Margin). You can see how well the lineup has performed so far under "Adj Team Eff Margin":

Trey Galloway would bring a lot to Indiana's starting lineup, particularly in the playmaking department. He has the best playmaking grade on the roster at http://EvanMiya.com, which takes into account projected assists and turnovers. His 2PT shooting is also much better than Carlyle's.

A lineup of Rice, Mgbako, Galloway, Reneau, and Ballo has a lot of strengths:A+ in 2PT ShootingA+ in Usage (basically shot creation)A in Scoring VolumeA in AssistsThe upgrade over IU's current starting lineup is particularly noticeable in the Assists department, moving from a B+ to an A:

Kanaan Carlyle has been really disappointing so far:- 9th on the team in BPR- BPR has dropped more since preseason than any other player- Box BPR is worst on the team, which measures how efficient your box stats are- Adjusted Team Efficiency Margin is worst on the team, which means IU is performing really poorly with him on the court- Turnovers are a major issue: He ranks in the bottom 5% nationally in projected TO%.

Oumar Ballo is still this team's most important player, particularly on the defensive end. His Defensive BPR of 2.97 is comfortably 1st on the team, and Indiana is only allowing 90.2 points per 100 possessions while he's on the floor according to Adjusted Team Defensive Efficiency, also best on the team.

The introduction of Anthony Leal leads to some interesting lineup options. They will need a lot more run before we can gain anything conclusive, but I'm very intrigued by this one:

In terms of Indiana's other lineups, they should stay away from the lineup of Rice, Tucker, Galloway, Goode, and Reneau. It's the 3rd most used lineup so far this season but is predicted to be the worst lineup of all units that have played at least 10+ possessions.

I told you all this before the season.
I am not the only one, but I have said all along we need Gallo starting over Carlyle. And I like Kanaan. His defense will be infectious. He needs to keep that up and bring energy every game.

Also-
I will contend that Gallo, Leal, Mgbako, Reneau, and Ballo will not hold up in conference. Ball handling isn't strong enough there.

If I would say one thing about Rice it's that we don't need him to be Boo Buie. Run the offense, facilitate, look for opportunities and learn to be a floor leader. There are plenty of scorers out there. Get them open looks.

Defense. It's terrible. They better figure it out soon. They don't have a clue on how to rotate. They are extremely slow to recognize what's happening. Whatever starting five or sub pattern they've used are not good enough to this point.

I'd be willing to live with a zone so Ballo can hang back and rebound and you don't have to worry about MR and OB trying to guard in space or switch. But they'll give up threes! Already doing that. Play a 3-2.

Defense was not terrible but bad at times on the perimeter.. This will adjust with communication.

On Evan Miya, I prefer to use the BOX BPR over the BPR. the BPR is a measurement of a players overall value to his team. Box BPR is a measurement of a players overall play based on his stats! Look at Ballo, rated at 46 BPR, because his value to his team is great because he has no backup. Then you look at his overall stats(Box BPR), Ballo falls to 94th. I want to compare player to player! Garcia of Minnesota is another example, high value to his team, but your look at his Box BPR and he does not even hardly register, which tells me Minnesota is not very good!

Great info but makes my head spin.

I didn't listen but read somewhere this morning that Woodson says they still have to work on their defense and communication. After playing pickup games all summer and 9 games into their season you would think they would have that figured out by now. Rude awakening next week with two B1G games.

Simple as that..
“Well, again man, we just gotta fix it. “

The only way I can like him again is if he were to respond to one of these questions with “THIS. IS. SPARTAAA. “ and kick the table over. At least it wouldn’t be the same shit over and over.

IIRC, it does seem like Lville & Gonz were taking a lot of layups. That’s both perimeter and interior D.
