Economic impact of no football in B1G cities....

Not only is the economic impact significant, it is accelerated by poor decisions like the one made by the Big 10 this week.

Three conferences claimed medical support to proceed, yet two state just the opposite. You’re going to have kids on campus, let them continue to practice, let them live together in dorms, but they can’t compete on Saturdays in half full outdoor stadiums? Tell me how this scenario makes sense?

Add to this the financial ruin of small and big businesses alike who rely on students, parents, alumni to visit Big 10 towns for games, and you have IMHO the Big 10 turning its back on the community that needs them (and pays for the Big 10 network upgrade on their cable systems).

If 3 of the power 5 conferences have data that support teams playing and stadiums to be 1/3 to 1/2 full, then why is the Big 10 taking such an inflammatory stance? Legal reasons? Political reasons? Cowardice? All of the above?

Wrong. This is the fallout of people NOT LOCKING DOWN. NOT MASKING. NOT FOLLOWING DISTANCING GUIDELINES. Had COVID-19 not been politicized and minimized by our president and many governors we would’ve gotten this under control by now. Anyone who thinks differently needs to wake up.
GO HOOSIERS!!

Fyi — The virus strain in America is more contagious than other countries—it is just a matter of when you will get it than if you get it- Sweden had a rough start but now in better shape than any other country.

I see everybody wearing masks for the last month— so — where has this gotten us — nowhere—

Question— did you lockdown? Have you left your home? Based upon your comments— you have been locked down... Is that true?

Look at New Zealand — locked down and other strong guidelines—- no cases— open up —

Now they have 4 test positive shut down again.. you watch —- New Zealand is on pace to be in a cycle of open, shutdown, open, shutdown.

It is a virus and it just won’t. go away by locking down.... once you build up herd immunity are you going to minimize the numbers of people with the virus. We still have people getting the swine flu.. but minimal numbers.

Nobody cried for lock down/masks , etc.. when the swine flu virus was killing the young— it was/is deadlier to the young than Covid—

July 31, 2020 -- In addition to wearing face masks, people should consider wearing goggles or eye shields for increased protection from COVID-19, Dr. Anthony Fauci said.

Are you wearing your googles?

Next thing Dr. Fauci will say we need to be wearing racing helmets..... but at the end of November this virus will be under control and things will open up.... then we will just wait until China comes up with another virus... in a lab partially funded by Dr. Fauci Government agency...

If you want to be mad at somebody be mad at China—

Everybody screamed racism when we “shut down” flights from China...

Hope your lockdown is going well for you....

25% of adults have considered suicide in June. 1 in 4. And the death rate in that group is lower than the flu.

https://qz.com/1892349/cdc-depression-and-anxiety-rises-for-us-adults-since-covid-19/

"Young adults, meanwhile, crave social connection but are grappling with lockdowns, a tough labor market, and school closures. A recent Pew Research Center report found that the proportion of young people who are neither working nor in school more than doubled between February and June."

I hope the ones spreading panic - mainly the media - are happy.

Dude, really? Wow. Take a breath and I hope you yourself can take politics out of your mind and just look at facts. The virus is gonna virus. It’s going to impact those who are most vulnerable...while restricting all of us. Less than 1% of those under 70 who’ve had this virus have died. Please stop thinking this is about what one person did or did not do... not helpful, not realistic.

BTW... the Big 10 commish shut down our football season yet his son continues to practice and will play for Ol Miss in the SEC. What does that tell you? Lawyers, bro.

I completely agree! Better, more responsible leadership from the president and certain governors would have subsided the impact of this disease months ago just like in Europe and Asia. Their immature actions have prolonged the seriousness of this disease. We would be having Big Ten Football with a different, more responsible president.

BS... It would not matter one bit what our President did because too many people would not follow it anyway... Let me ask, so you want to stop the spread of this virus the same way they are stopping it in about all the other countries? No, you don't, and I'll tell you why because the media doesn't show us this. One of my best friends is a pilot for FedEX and has been flying all of Europe, the Middle East, Southeast Asia, Japan and China for over 25 years. His schedule takes him out of the US for weeks at a time. Ever since early March, as soon as he lands in any country - especially China, and Southeast Asia and India - him and his co-pilots are escorted to their hotel, in some countries by armed guards. They are required to stay in their room... no going down to the bar or out for the night... the entire time they're there. They get room service if the want anything.... this is strictly enforced in all countries. In most countries there are armed guards at the end of the hall to make sure no one is roaming... When he rides from the airport to the hotel or when he looks out the window of his hotel, he said just about everyplace looks like a ghost town. All of the other countries have taken extreme measures that have allowed them to curb the spread. I'm positive those same measures would never work here... period. So, it's not our President that's the problem it's the stubborn, misinformed and mislead by our media that is the problem. They do what they want and the politicians will do nothing to stop them.

Despite the extreme measures of other countries, the virus still spreads.

And when those meaures are lifted, there will be more cases. There's no doubt about that.

What we need to concentrate on is protecting the most vulnerable - over 50% of all deaths are those 70+ - and concentrating on improving the health care of those who have it.

Suicide and overdose deaths are killing more young adults than the vius. By keeping society down, we are seeing a large increase in murders, child abuse, divorces, etc. All kinds of societal issues.

Keeping society locked down is not only stopping the virus, it is causing more deaths than those attributed to the virus.

That’s exactly what everyone should be doing for people that are going from country to country right now. I’m sorry he can’t go down to the bar and drink. Poor guy.

Quit letting Trump off the hook for every crappy thing he does. Look at the facts, don’t make them up like he does. Just simply look at the curves for the USA and other countries and you will not need to look any further. He has not supported the mask, he waited way too long to take action back in February, he keeps promoting drugs, even did infectants, that don’t work, he gives out wrong misleading information and it is costing us lives. Just ask Herman Cain. For all of you idiots who cannot see beyond Trump’s BS, I say WAKE UP! Don’t be so stupid, he is a complete failure!

Excellent! Everyone, here is a perfect example of what I said was the stubborn, misinformed and mislead by the media. Thanks, great work!

Hypocrisy - claiming the Pres should have done more sooner, yet when he closed the border to China and then Europe in February, he was called racist and over reacting by the Speaker of the House and the current Dem President candidate.

Hypocrisy - the Big Ten Conf Commissioner Kevin Warren working with Univ Presidents shuts down the football schedule and yet his son continues to practice and will eventually play for the SEC's Miss St program.

Spare me "the Pres should have done more" BS; there was no play book, everyone regardless of political party did the best they could and now we begin to realize this virus will not simply go away (because, ummm... it's a virus) so people feel the need to point fingers.

Please get back on topic or this thread will be locked. There are WAY TOO MANY threads turning into a political battle. Stop it and talk about anything related to sports.

I understand politics will come up but we have seen way too many threads turn into a ridiculous “discussion” if I can even call it that. You guys know what will make people tick, I’ve seen it too many times now. I don’t mind having rational discussions if your post contains something knowledgeable about both sports and something else but please stop making these threads about just politics.

That’s fair Alex... I think this qualifies as a football item. This is something that’s frustrating for any Big 10 football fan to see. I know we’re still a long way from the SEC actually playing games, but if they do end up playing and Warren’s son participates then how can he justify his Big 10 decision? Will someone call him on it?

As a side note, prior to the football decision, I’d been impressed with Warren. He’s smart and is bringing a lot of positive community involvement into Big 10 communities. Perhaps he’s been over managed by the Univ Presidents... but then they should stand up and be accountable and not place Warren in the crossfire.

HE WORKS FOR THE PRESIDENTS!

HIS BOSSES CANCELLED THE SEASON!

Ever disagreed with a decision your bosses made but had to toe the company line?

It's also more than ok to make a decision you think is best for YOUR family but when tasked with making that decision for hundreds, you make a different decision.

EITHER WAY HE DIDN'T MAKE THE DECISION!

Did you read my post? I stated that this could be the work of the Univ. Presidents.
Either way - he is the face of the Big 10, he's the one who announced the Big 10 schedule one week, then pulled the plug on the season the next. He's been in charge of managing this from the beginning. He's done a poor job and he needs to be held accountable.
And no - if he allows his son to play, he's a hypocrite when he stands up and says there's too much compelling data not to play, etc.
We will agree to disagree. I feel he's mis-used his responsibility in a big way on this one.

https://www.thedailyhoosier.com/wat...es-release-of-revised-2020-football-schedule/

Big Ten Commissioner Keven Warren spoke with BTN’s Dave Revsine following the release of the revised 2020 football schedule.

In his remarks, Warren makes it clear that the release of the updated schedule should not be interpreted to mean that the Big Ten is certain to move forward with a football campaign this fall.

“It would be purely speculation for me to sit here today and say that this is the percent chance I think we have a season,” Warren told Revsine when asked about the likelihood the season will occur.

You're the one that put in ALL CAPS that it wasn't his decision. Stop being a hypocrite

How is that hypocritical? Show me where he hasn't owned it. Show me public comments or unnamed sources where KW passes the the buck and lays it at the feet of the presidents instead of owning it himself.

I don't need to get into the back and forth, but I have a question....Has anyone shown that the athletes are safer not playing than playing? It may indeed be the case, but the same University presidents who cancelled sports are the same ones telling students to come back. So is it safer to not play or are the risks equal to possibly better since they will have an incentive not to interact as much with the general population?

Everyone is trying to find their way to dealing with this the best way they can. Some will choose one way, others will choose other ways. Most will probably change their minds and or tweak things as they go. Everyone is acting in good faith. Give everyone slack ffs, and quit playing politics.

In my opinion is that it's clear you can social distance and go to class. You can't social distance and play football. So theoretically, playing causes greater increase of spread.

Whether you think the virus is harmful to students or not is another topic/discussion. I'm just saying that's the difference....specific to your question.

I get that and it is a fair point. it is easier to social distance, but I am not sure I envision a socially distanced campus. Social distancing plays a bigger role indoors than outdoors, but point taken.

on campus kids might socially distance.....but during their free time....nope. Not gonna happen. We've seen that already. Hopefully they just keep it to themselves rather than passing it on to people that are potentially at risk.

https://www.cbssports.com/college-f...ly-voted-to-nix-2020-college-football-season/

You announce a schedule, get hopes up, then the next week you pull the plug. Why bother release a schedule if you think within a week you’d be canceling the season? Why do that to your players and fan base? Poor judgement all around from the Presidents and Commissioner.

And now it seems, the process used to make the decision was a confusing conversation. No vote? Just a discussion and boom... there goes the season.
KW under increasing scrutiny regarding how this has been managed...by him. Unfortunate.
