It's exactly what the announcers.on the Belmont / Maryland said. He's an excellent golfer. He didnt play AAU ball until the summer before his senior year. It wasn't until then that D1 coaches started giving him a look.

Heard it stupid AAU doesn’t even make players better in fact probably makes them worse

It was said frequently on TV during the OVC tourney (Which was played in Evansville) and during the "First Four" game that he did not play AAU until after his Jr. year. He in fact was a golfer, then decided that year that he wanted to concentrate on basketball.
