Dusty May and Ohio State??

I thought it was Sean Miller.

I like Dusty but I’d like a non-IU person from a big school. Less risk of making the jump to the complexity of a big school and also I’m tired of IU-related coaches.

Could be another Matta type timing issue for IU...

But I can't say I'd pull the trigger, right now, specifically for May. I guess that's the power of pulling the trigger early though...you get first crack at recruiting the top candidates.

the good news is: you don't have to! Anyone who has it in their mind who should be hired is just guessing. Set a hiring plan in place, and execute it trying to insure objectivity as much as possible. At this level, most every one will be convincing, but the person(s) doing the hiring get to talk with and review the responses of each candidate and get a feel for their plan, approach and vision. No idea if I'd suggest May, Matta, Beard, Scherz, Pearl, etc... I do know I'd be reaching out to all of those guys and a few more.

Supposedly feelers have been out already. Confirmed by Trilly. Looks like pearl buyout is 8.5 mill and he’s one of the coaches contacted. This is being discussed on the other sites. Sounding like the Ohio state gig is Millers to lose. So against my judgment we may see a change at the end of this year. Different times I guess.

History would say we are missing the boat. But this is a tough one. One magical season at a very small school?

I'd rather throw a brinks armored truck at someone who is winning at a high major school but would leave for more money and higher visibility. IU may be less relevant than ever but it's still regularly draws the highest TV ratings in the BIG.

Barnes, Matta, Drew, Donovan( I know I know), McDermott. Hell let Sampson take a redemption tour for all I care. Just hire someone who is a proven winner at this level.

The program needs to be re-vamped from top to bottom....Head coach, asst. coaches, strength and conditioning, NIL, recruiting coordinator, nutritionist, values, expectations, etc.

I think as much as pay...a vision with ALL of this would need to be used to sway guys of the caliber of Donovan, Oats, Beard, etc...

I'm sure IU already has things like what you're mentioning. But if they're not already, set aside funding so we have the ability to make all of these types of positions elite on the national level.

Yea. This I'm sure is in the big pitch. Come to IU. This is your NIL. This is your huge assistant and ops budget. You're getting all you need to succeed.

why would you want CMW back? This is the most poorly coached team I've seen since I began watching IU bball around '75-76. Even the early Crean teams with far less talent competed harder. I've never watched an AAU game, but it's hard for me to imagine there being less blocking out, intensity, missed screens, etc... That compounded by the failure in decent roster construction and being stuck again with a major rebuild through the portal (I would give Woody decent marks in recruiting and getting "talent" in the portal/late last year), but it's confirming to me it's unlikely to have a successful overhaul using portal players. You can augment a decent team and make it better, but if that's the core of your team, I don't think it's going to be very successful. I don't feel like I need another year of this to confirm that, and I think it's too costly to the program to wait, when the results next year seem pretty likely to determine to me.

I know what you're saying. With that said, you wouldn't hire May because he is an IU person, you would hire him because of his resume. His connection to IU isn't rock solid like other IU candidates (or current coaches) of the past. He isn't enshrined at IU from his playing days, he wasn't a part of any title winning teams, he didn't play for IU and even from a coaching perspective, he was merely a student manager who graduated from the university. He is far from the typical, "IU" guy, you know? It almost feels like a stretch to consider him an IU guy but there's certainly a connection.

To me, you hire him because of what he's been able to do on the court, so far. Do I think he's got a long track record of proven success? No. This season has not yet played out and is another building block but with another deep run you can likely start believing the odds of him being a solid choice only continue going up. There are certainly other coaches I would rather have that would leave me with no doubt we would be successful in a very short amount of time. However, I would not be dis(May)ed if we hired a young coach who is proving his chops so far. But I think there is more of his story that still is yet to be told at this point. Time will tell!

IU's wins have come SOLELY on the shoulders of the sheer level of talent we have. That talent is not being coached which is why other teams who are being coached are now surpassing us. They're improving while we're standing still. CMW can blame everything under the sun but you can watch that team with a basic knowledge of basketball and see its due to a lack of coaching.

I wasn’t saying he would or that I want him back. I’m saying I think/thought he would be but I’m changing my mind. I originally thought he would get one more year but I’m rethinking that. The new power conference, NIL etc.. is changing the way these things play out. In real time.

If they indeed want may they need to hire him while the iron is hot. Thats this year. If they flame out or he’s hired by another school then that thought is over. Buckle up might get interesting.

I’ve said repeatedly we need to clean house from top to bottom. But I might be willing to reconsider including the cheerleaders in that sweep. That’s probably going too far. 😂
I don't know if they need to go, funny you brought them up but was thinking last night watching the game a couple of them may need to spend some time with the conditioning coach.

Do we still have the Red Steppers? I somehow got a seat damn near in the center of their section one game 40 years ago. Whoa!

I agree. I think dusty's a little too risky. If a change is made we should go with someone more proven. Pearl, Matta, Marshall ,Beard, musselmen. Someone like that.

What's that have to do with coaching?
It’s just funny I don’t care.

He was great a WSU. I don’t like that he hasn’t been at a big school and he has been out of the game for a bit. Maybe he is the next RMK, beats me.

Marshall? You've got to be joking. That guy is a Grade A asshole.
And Musselman hasn't had a great year at Arkansas either, 13-13 (4-9). Not ready to call a prediction I made a couple years ago (said he was Mark Fox 2.0) true yet, will have to see how he does next year.

I saw a tweet last night that said Sean Miller was going to leave Xavier for Ohio State. Said it's identical to Ed Cooley having an agreement to go to Georgetown once his last season with Providence was over.

Who knows? Who cares? Ohio State's in even worse shape than we are. I think. Hell, I don't know because I don't care. lol

One reason I like him. Who wouldn't want that guy fighting for them?
He was one of the top 3 xs and o's guys in college basketball while at Wichita. Would win big here. But there's zero chance he'd ever be hired.

Have you not heard the stuff thats going on with that team? The portal is creating some opportunities nobody expected. 😉 just google Arkansas triangle basketball.
