It's RHP Brayden Risedorph on the mound for IU and LHP Jonathan Santucci for Duke.

Nick Mitchell is out for IU with what I believe they said was an injury and Mathison will start in CF and lead-off. Tibbitts will be at 1st and Purdue transfer Jake Stadler will be behind the plate. Colopy will be in RF.

1st inning:

T1st:

Risedorph put them down in order to start the game and he had one K.

B1st:

Mathison walked on four pitches to lead off. Pyne K'd swinging on a full count for the first out.

Taylor got IU's first hit of the season to put runners on 1st and 2nd and one out.

Tibbitts K'd looking for the 2nd out. Cerny K'd swinging and IU left two on.

End of 1st: IU 0 Duke 0

I'm watching on ESPN+. Man, the CF camera angle sucks. When the ball crosses the plate, you can't see it because the pitcher is in the way. At least for the Duke pitcher, it was. I guess the way he follows through on the pitch. It's better with Risedorph pitching.

T2nd:

Risedorph K'd the leadoff hitter. Risedorph walked the next batter on a full count to put a man on with one out.

A FC got the runner at first with the man on 1st moving into scoring position at 2nd with two outs. A K ended the top of the inning.

B2nd:

IU went down in order.

End of 2nd: IU 0 Duke 0

3rd inning:

T3rd:

It's the 8 thru 1 hitters up for Duke and Risedorph put them down in order.

B3rd:

It's the 9 thru 2 hitters up for IU. IU went down in order with all being Ks and the Duke pitcher has 7 K's right now.

4th inning:

T4th:

It was the 2 thru 4 hitters up and the leadoff batter reached on an error by Pyne. A GO moved the runner to 2nd with one out. A FO and K ended Duke's inning and Risedorph has 4 Ks.

T5th:

It's the 6 thru 8 batters up for Duke. Risedorph was at 60 pitches.

Risedorph put down the first two batters but then gave up a double to put a man in scoring position with two outs. It was Duke's first hit of the game. Another double to right center gave Duke the lead at 1-0 and Mercer went to the bullpen and brought in Ryan Kraft.

Kraft Kd the next batter to end Duke's 5th.

B5th:

It's was the 8 thru 1 batters up with Colopy leading off. Santucci was at 69 pitches.

Colopy lined out to 2b and Burckel walked on four pitches to put a man on with one out.

Mathison singled with Burckel reaching 2nd and one out. Pyne hit into a DP to end the inning. IU had outhit Duke 4 to 2, but back-to-back doubles are the difference in the game right now.

End of 5th: Duke 1 IU 0

Kraft got the leadoff hitter on a great play by Cerny. Back-to-back homers gave Duke a 3-0 lead and the 3-4 hitters for Duke have done some damage.

Kraft walked the next batter after giving up the homers and there was a man on with one out. A single put runners on 1st and 2nd with one out. We are not seeing the Kraft we saw last season right now, but it's just the season opener.

Kraft got the next hitter on a FO to RF and then got a K to retire the side.

B6th:

It's the 3 thru 5 hitters up with Taylor leading off. Duke went to the bullpen and brought in another lefty in Owen Proksch. Duke has a strong bullpen coming into the season so it's going to be a challenge to cut into the lead.

Taylor grounded out and Tibbitts walked to put a man on and one out.

A two-run homer by Tyler Cerny cut the lead to 3-2.

Shepard was hit by a pitch to put a runner on and one out.

Stadler reached on a FC with Shepard out at 2nd and two outs.

Colopy Kd to end the inning.

End of 6th: Duke 3 IU 2

It's the 9 thru 2 hitters up for Duke and Kraft is back out there. Kraft had a rough 7th and gave up two homers and four earned runs and was pulled for Aydan Decker-Petty with IU down 5-2. It was a rough start to the season for Kraft,

B7th:

Burckel led off with a ground out. Mathison then homered to make it 5-3.

Back-to-back singles by Pyne and Taylor put two on and one out and Duke went to the bullpen and brought in RHP Charlie Beilenson.

Tibbitts and Cerny both Kd to end the inning. Duke's pitching strength is their bullpen and they shut IU down after the homer to two singles.

End of 7th: Duke 5 IU 3

RHP Evan Whiteaker relieved D-P and gave up a homer to the leadoff batter to make it 6-3, but he retired the next three batters to retire the side.

B8th:

It was the 6 thru 8 hitters up with Shepard leading off. Shepard Kd to lead off and then Stadler got his first hit as a Hoosier on a double with a runner on 2nd and one out. The next two batters went down to end the inning.

End of 8th: Duke 6 IU 3

Its the 2 thru 4 hitters up for Duke with Whiteaker still on the mound. The leadoff hitter reached on a single.

Whiteaker got a DP ball for two outs and the bases empty. After a single, a FO retired the side.

B9th:

The top of the order is up for IU with Mathison leading off. IU went down in order to end the game.

Final: Duke 6 IU 3

Just got home in time to see the 8th and 9th. That damn Duke pitcher needs a beat down for that BS stall crap he pulled on Taylor. How the hell is there nothing in the rules about that??

IU has dropped their season opener in five straight seasons. Once Duke grabbed the lead, it was going to be difficult to come from behind with Duke's bullpen being a big strength of their team. Kraft was a big disappointment but it's just the season opener. Risedorph pitched pretty well but got the loss.

IU kept it close to the vest, but Nick Mitchell was hit in the hand by a pitch about two to three weeks ago and is expected to be back in about a week or two according to Coach Mercer. Here's a short video of Mercer commenting on it from iubase.com.

IU had scoring chances but couldn't get the clutch hits that Duke got to take the early lead. Cerny's transition to shortstop appears to be an early success with him making some great plays today. IU had two errors to no errors for Duke.

IU struck out 13 times today and they had three players with multiple hits.

Cerny went 2 for 4 with 2 RBIs and a homer
Mathison was 2 for 4 with 1 RBI and a homer
Taylor was 2 for 5

Risedorph pitched well giving up 2 hits and 1 earned run in 4.2 IP, however, those two hits came on back-to-back doubles in the 5th which broke a 0-0 tie.

Kraft was a disaster today and let's hope it's just an aberration. He left the game after 1.1 IP with a 27.00 ERA on the day. I just hope he's not following the same path that Bothwell followed after Bothwell had a very good season two years ago and then fell apart for most of last season before finding himself again at the end of last season with very good pitching. We are going to need far more than just one game to make any judgments on Kraft and I believe he had just a bad day and that's it.
