Doyle is a drama queen.

I think it's much easier than this...CTA chooses the QB most likely to win.

Sure he may cycle some freshman through (Penix can play in up to four games) and still redshirt them...but good grief Doyle.
It’s sometimes difficult to get angle right and he kind of keys dramatic with the “not a disaster of 2018” self defeatist line. Did laugh out loud at the friendly schedule comment though. Supposed to last year though that is true. What I got out of it is we have some pretty good options at QB. I like each of them in theory at least.

It is a big decision though and the biggest since Allen has been here. He is setting the stage for the future and for him to say the picture is becoming more clear everyday to me that seems like Ramsey. This is JMO but I would make it clear t all the QB's that if they don't move the ball they will be replaced. Sure its added pressure but that goes with the job (QB).

The only idiotic comment in the article was "The running backs are not a strength, which is why this team had better be able to throw the ball." We have a slew of solid running backs!

The other thing is I don't mind being in the dark about this. If I was Allen I wouldn't name a starter till game time. Why tip the other team off????? Thats just dumb IMO

Ramsey doesn't strike me as a quarterback capable of taking this team to the next level. He may, however, be the most proficient QB on the roster. Perhaps his increased arm strength will "lengthen" the field a bit...JMO

Doyle is a master at using hundreds of words to state the obvious and come to no conclusion whatsoever.

In the end he didn't have the balls to come down on Penix' side.....that's obviously his private opinion.

I think what the article does reflect is a general angst among many IU fans who like Allen but aren't completely confident he has what it takes..............personally, just based on what I saw, I don't see how Allen could start Penix. The tougher decision will be what to do with him the rest of the year.

One thing about all this.......you have to feel for Ramsey in this situation. All he's done is keep his head down and compete to the best of his ability. I know its all part of the 'job', but its a tough position to be in, that's for sure.

Josh and the Rivals crew did a piece on Ramsey and I think they were accurate in their assessment of him. I usually disagree with Helmholdt on many of his takes, but here, I think he's correct.

They basically just didn't see enough upside/dynamics with Ramsey, hence the low rating out of high school. Coaching AND winning at IU, takes something more than a safe approach.....

While its true that Ramsey lacks the upside of Penix/Dawkins, calling Ramsey the "safe" choice is simply based off of perception of Penix/Dawkins, and nothing to with performance in practice/on the field. Only the coaches know how close Penix/Dawkins are to reaching their upside/potential.

None of the QB choices will matter if the OL does
not step it up.

This was actually a decent article by Doyel if you can believe it. The jury is out on Allen and this staff.

While I agree that the jury is still out on Allen, I don’t think the QB decision will be all that informative as the article suggests, as Doyle (or anyone else but the coaches) has no idea how well or poorly the QBs are performing in practice.

Didn’t like article for the arrogance in it. “Safe choice” makes it look like if Allen doesn’t agree with Doyel’s view then he’s a timid (de facto “not good enough” innuendo) coach.

I trust coaches to make a straight up decision based on performance in camp they’ve been watching every day plus film review afterwards. Way more than superficial Doyel observations.

Do people think players don’t improve with hard work? Ramsey is a coaches kid who grinds, runs 22mph, and protects the ball. Is that not valued? Of course it is!

Allen is in year two, first decision he did after last season was to change S&C coaches that is already paying off. He doesn’t make excuses, is always open on what they need to work on, and had a great 1st recruiting class and off to a good start for 2019.

Hold off judgments on who Allen selects and how they perform until after the season, let them have the shot to produce! Same with DeBord and OL coach Hiller: let’s see if the OL is better this year and if so, DeBord may look like an innovative genius. But let facts be based upon actual results, not speculation.

Doyle writes human interest pieces but really has no insight on the strategic elements of the game.

I wonder if he’s still searching for that little dog in the parking lot named “Cuddles” who he devoted an entire article a couple years ago during the middle of the IU -Purdue game? That was just nonsense.

The clip below at the 2:38 mark should be standard response to a guy like Doyle from coaches and players alike:
