Don't Panic.

IU wasn't suppose to win this game?

what a piece of crap, OSU is a mediocre team. IU had a chance to make a statement and instead laid an egg... just like they'll do against PU.

The effort today was unacceptable, especially by guys like Blackmon and Williams... unless JBJ is sick, I'd bench him against PU... some of the worse defense I've seen.

If IU loses to PU you can kiss any chance of an NCAA bid goodbye, should have won this game going away. The lack of any adjustment at the half was predictable, but still very frustrating.

A bad PSU team beat us at CP Calberts senior year.

OSU also beat us in Columbus that year. It happens.

(Yes, PSU WON that game)

Being 9-point underdogs would suggest IU wasn't supposed to win

this game. OSU needed this one just as badly.

Things happen. And I'm usually the eternal pessimist here, but this was going to be a tough game to win under ideal circumstances. We only beat them by three in Bloomington, and they were 3-21 from the arc.

Re: It wasn't the lose. It was the total lack of D.

They played small ball better than we did today. They were much more athletic than us while leaving their bigs on the bench.

Re: It wasn't the lose. It was the total lack of D.

Show me a team that starts two freshmen, two sophomores and a junior that you would like for us to emulate on defense. These kids got their kudos in AAU/high school ball for their offense and were recruited accordingly. They learn defense in college if they learn it at all. Some, who are good enough offensively, might get a chance to learn defense at the NBA level.

Steve Alford, accorded one of IU's all-time best,...never did. Foot-speed is not a big plus with several on this team.

IU and CTC, always a victim of special circumstances

All programs are recruiting from the same pool of players and all programs face the same challenges in managing their rosters. The youth excuse is lame when Calipari uses it, and it's just as lame when you use it on behalf of CTC.

All programs recruit players that are the product of the same pre-college systems and the programs must coach them up on defense as well as offense.

CTC has shown an ability to coach offense. He has players that are quick, athletic, and driven enough to be one of the best offensive teams in the nation. A team with this much talent has no business being ranked ~200 on defense.

Either CTC is failing to coach defense & install effective systems, or the players aren't driven to play tough defense. It's on the coaches to make those things happen.

No one said anything.....

about CTC. I asked the poster to give me a team he would like for us to emulate on defense. Two freshmen, two sophomores, and a junior and no one over 6' 6" or so, and bigs that carry little weight.

Was Maryland's defense also lousy in our win over them.

I'll ask you to do the same as I did the poster,.....name a team you think we can and/or should emulate based on that team being akin to IU in talent and size.

Our defense will be hit and miss in most games, however turnovers killed us at OSU and Crean has talked about the cause for such in that particular game.

Re: Curious...what are games IU is "supposed to win"?*

Win at home and win 50% of your road games.

Obviously, I don't have the time to comb over every roster

looking for one that starts a 6'6 center and nothing much in the post area coming off the bench. That in itself is pretty inexcusable.

I never expected this team to be among the top defenses, but I also never expected them to be rated 200+. Think about this for a second - IU's current defense is ranked lower than CTC's first two seasons at IU. Without exaggerating, I might be able to say this is the worst defensive team in IU history!

Right now IU has the lowest rated defense among the Kenpom top 50 teams overall, and the 3rd lowest rated
defense among the top 100 teams overall. Surely there is at least one undersized team in those groups that is able to play some solid defense. And again, if none of them are undersized you'd have to ask yourself why IU is the only one...

Since post defense is pretty much a lost cause for this team, I would expect IU's roster full of talented guards and wings to be exceptional at defending the perimeter - forcing opponents into low 3-point percentages, stopping dribble drives, and preventing the ball from getting into the post. They're actually pretty poor perimeter defenders as well, which I didn't expect.

I suppose I'd choose the perimeter defense of Virginia, Villanova, or Louisville. But, those defenses probably rely on some sort of post presense. I'd definitely be doing something to make sure my guards are agitating the crap out of the opposing team before it even gets the chance to pass or dribble into the post.
