Bravo on the Fuhrman reference.

I must admit the Joe story/preview made my eyes misty. Not sure who could have undergone through all those tragedies and still come out ok.

That's where my respect for Joe as a man at the most basic.

Yeah it was pretty boring, even as my personal fav Pete kind of fell flat (other than pointing to his ring and saying this represents the incredible process we can achieve in America....or something like that).

Then Bloomberg came out and killed it. I loved Bloombergs tone. It was half mocking and taunting while based in data. As I told my gf...who's better to demean a NY billionaire conman than a ten times larger NY billionaire who built his fortune from nothing.

But wow....it takes a lot to get me to tear up but once the seal is broken I'm in trouble and the seal was broken with that kid who stutters.

I was vulnerable after him and yeah, the amount of loss that Biden has had to overcome hit me harder than it normally does.

Then he was a GD hammer.

I was nervous just hoping he wouldn't stumble too much but holy f....he killed.

That massive gasp was the sound of everyone who truly thought he has some kind of dementia.

He sounded like a real war time president.

And yeah, my damn eyes were watering up that they hurt.

Its a healthy exercise. Empathy -- one of the key ingredients that make us all humans. And something Trump lacks, which is why it makes him such a good conman. One of the greatest ever.

I heard a theory on Trump that made sense....and that was he has a severe personality disorder.

It prevents him from understanding reality.

His reality is his super hero comic book story and anyone who defies him is an evil comic book villain. Why would anyone defy Batman? They must be an evil villain.

Sounds crazy but that's a severe narcissistical personality disorder.

He's not an evil genius. He's a child at the park with a bath towel as his superman cape.

And yes, the long point is that when you're reality is your fantasy, it's difficult to have empathy.

It's impossible to have humility.

I don't know, is it absolutely 100% right? Probably not but it does give a different spin to why he does the obvious dumbass things that he does.

Again he doesn't come across as a smart, maniacal strategic thinker like Hans Gruber.

The first component of selling is to make the other believe. It's hard to make someone believe something that you don't believe yourself.

He reminds me of SNL's Penelope. The girl who always has to top everyone in whatever they are talking about.

Possibly. Coping mechanism with an unhappy childhood? (I am a firm believer that a happy balanced childhood sets you up for life.)

It’s textbook narcissistic personality disorder. To the letter.
His dad certainly seemed like a world class asshole.

Regardless, Donald has an extreme personality disorder, without question. He's mentally ill, that's been obvious for years.

It's clear as daylight to us. However his supporters don't see it or if they do, don't have an issue with it.

But as I posted in a different thread, this is how they see Trump according to various surveys on their perception of their Dear Leader:

  • Trump isn't a perfect man. Because he gets stuff done. He’s not perfect, but he’s honest and tries.
  • He is fighting strongly the Antifa, Socialist, Communist, Wall Street, Muslims, Gays, Foreigners from taking over the country.
  • He is fighting strongly the Antifa, Socialist, Communist, Wall Street, Muslims, Gays, Foreigners from taking over the country.
  • He will not let Biden destroy the powerful gains Trump has done for the economy/stock market.

Its a divided country by nature but two different realities/universes? How did the country get here?

Agreed on all fronts. And the narrative is that the rednecks vote for trump but in truth every single successful business owner I know, including several insanely wealthy people, are voting for trump. They hate gov and taxes and don’t give a shit about racism and police abuse. They assume guys like Floyd are crims and if you’re a criminal police abuse is the risk you take.

We live in an extremely diverse country with innumerable interests. I thought Biden did the best one could to touch on that in his speech. I thought his speech was great.

I thought it was a good speech but it wasn't nothing I wasn't aware of Joe. My respect for Joe comes from him as a human being -- the ability to bounce back from personal tragedies.

I bet Trump will bring up the one plagiarised line Joe had done a couple of decades ago. And everyone will be harping on that whilst not mentioning the laundry list of Trump's misconduct and history.

Its a shame, if Beau didn't pass away, we probably wouldn't have Trump today.

btw I had a Singaporean friend here asked me earlier today, Joe Biden? He is a pedo right? :(

Feckin Facebook I bet.

I heard a thing from Brit Hume that I thought was spot on. He said Biden doesn’t really matter much. As long as he appears decent and with it that’s all he needs to do. The entire election is a referendum on trump.

He did a good job with both content and delivery. He helped himself in several different ways. I loved the first several minutes about coming together. Conspicuously absent was any mention of the terrible state of many cities at this moment. His framing of the Covid issue pretty much forces him into needing continuous bad news for his day o"thene strategy to have staying power.

What can and should a president do about "the terrible state of the cities" (assume the reference is to violent crime and protests gone amuck) and the Covid pandemic ? Also to what extent should we hold the president accountable?

In my view, these subjects are very much like the economy. The president gets a boost when the economy does well, but the question remains as to how important is a president to the performance of the economy.

That's certainly is the framing of the office of POTUS these days. Decency, being "nice," and making us feel good is at the top of the list of qualifications for POTUS for many of us. This usually boils down to the ability to give a good speech, and no doubt Biden rose to the occasion last night. That qualification isn't a negative but it is not near the top of my list of what I want from POTUS. We are increasingly living in a state of fear. The antidote for so many is a single Mr. Right.

Trump is no angel. But damn, the list of accomplishments under his administration is impressive and by and large I agree with those. The UAE deal came out of nowhere for us but Trump had been working on that of some time. The ideal POTUS is a nice guy and gets things done. Those people are hard to find.

Being in manufacturing and dealing with a world I had never dealt with prior I gained a new perspective. To a person the execs at every factory were trump supporters. I really liked where we were before the pandemic. The message of business and making things here and better deals and no longer subsidizing other countries etc resonated with many I worked with daily.

But he dropped the ball on the pandemic. And he’s obviously not solely responsible, Americans are selfish aholes, but the pandemic is the largest obstacle to our recovery and imo he has proven himself totally incapable of handling it. Time to give the next guy a shot.

I don’t see how any other issue matters more than the pandemic.

Excellent question. I don't think there is a lot POTUS can do, there is a lot a POTUS can say. One thing we can do is exactly the opposite of what the officials of Portland, N.Y.C., Washington D.C. and Minneapolis did. Instead of standing by and watching the protesters do their thing, go undercover and mingle with the crowd and seize all baseball bats, crowbars, incendiary devices, and other paraphernalia. If the feds could provide personnel to help with that, that would be good. The rioters mingled with the crowd to make it appear that eventual law enforcement push back was an attack on protestors. That narrative worked. We weren't very smart about it.

I don't think Trump or any POTUS can really "handle" a pandemic. N.Y.C. was an early severe hotspot. Trump's overreaction to that was a huge mistake. Part of the reason for that was Trump wanted to make decisions and show he was a "decider". He bragged about those decisions. That is the bad side of Trump. His narcissism requires him to show that he is doing stuff and then talk about what he did. In my view, the N.Y.C. situation, (including Cuomo's daily T.V. appearances which I first thought were helpful until I realized the overreaction) stoked the state of fear narrative. N.Y.C. being the seat of power for most news outlets helped too. The state of fear spread across the country as fast as the pandemic. This is not to understate the pandemic. I think the March shutdowns were necessary and mostly effective. The problem with the state of fear is that it quickly caused us to think that the pandemic was a political problem and not a public health problem. That's life these days. I used to believe that we come together in times of crisis. Probably starting with Katrina, we have decided to make political hay out of any crisis. Biden has decided to ride that horse. His simple declarative that the "virus is not going away" and he will fix things next February was the most cringeworthy point of his speech for me. He is now vested in ongoing bad news. Does this mean that the Democrats will obstruct therapeutics and vaccine distribution? If that requires legislation, don't bet against it. Does this mean that the Democrats will continue shut down chaos? There is some evidence of that already.

I think Biden should have pledged his total support for all measures to control the virus in the ensuring weeks and months and that we all need to work together toward that end. Then say, "if the virus is still out of control next February despite our best efforts, here is what I will do that isn't being done." But no . . . . . .the politics of the virus is simply too important. Biden wants to ride the virus into the White House. Pelosi has already signaled that another Covid relief compromise is not strategically good because it would give the GOP an out. Ugh.

With you one hundred percent that the media exacerbated things that leadership in ny botched things, that blame runs deep and wide. But at least Biden said there would be a national mask mandate. Trump made masks political. Today he’s saying play football. Have fans. There’s little coordination, logistical and admin blunders likely borne of little experience in this arena for trump etc. imo he gets an F on the pandemic.

And on a personal note his narcissism is grating. I hate celebrity culture. There’s a massive hypocrisy and condescension that attends same. Well trump is included. His lies, likely a product of narcissism, drive me nuts. We have lives and businesses dependent on facts. You can’t constantly say we’re going to have a vaccine “very soon.” We have therapeutics on their way “soon.” It sets up false expectations and again is offensive in its condescension. Having his family and Jared kushner involved is also off-putting. Honestly I thought the dnc was awful. More celebrity bullshit and platitudes and formulaic nonsense. I hate both our choices but trump is the losing coach so I’m ready for a new coach to tackle the pandemic. And being the selfish jerk I am the pandemic is all I really care about.

I'm mostly on board on with your second paragraph. The point where we differ is the effect of false expectations. Trump was overly optimistic. That doesn't affect me. I can't speak for others. I guess in the context of the pandemic, a vaccine "very soon" is not inconsistent with what I have heard from the experts, including this information I previously posted. The death rates are falling like a rock, that is at least in part do to therapeutics and better understanding on how to treat. Trump is wrong to claim credit for this, but he is right to point it out.

Something I’d like to see:

I think the DNC could host a second convention, except this one is comprised only of real republicans that won’t be voting for trump. They could get a pretty notable lineup of republicans for such a mock convention, and it would be most entertaining to watch.

Yes 2019 was down but was recovering in January of 2020 and it was strong in 17 and 18. The sector we’re in is relatively small but again all of the execs I deal with were still very confident and in expansion mode. Where they stand today I’m less certain. The pandemic destroyed our industry.

A lot of companies i know, and have seen the books on, pretty much peaked late '17 or '18. (January is typically good for business capital investment.) After that it has been a slow descent. Personally, we have been very lucky the last 5 months.

I thought Biden's speech was pretty well structured for what he has to do to win (which isn't much).

Congrats to his speech writers on the content and congrats to joe on a solid delivery of that content.

I was interested in the reviews from the predictable media and there was no surprise in what i saw.

FOX and even Chris Christy ran with: :They gave no specifics, and for good reason...their specifics would scare the hell out of the American people"

Joe Scarborough had the strongest statement I saw from the left: "Americans have not been so moved since Reagan's speech at the Brandenburg Gate"

Joe Scarborough had the strongest statement I saw from the left: "Americans have not been so moved since Reagan's speech at the Brandenburg Gate"

The left? Joe Scarborough - conservative Republican congressman from Florida? This Joe Scarborough?

During his congressional career, he received a 95 percent lifetime rating from the American Conservative Union.[15] He signed the Contract with America. Scarborough served on the Armed Services, Judiciary, Government Reform, and Education committees. In 1998 he was named chairman of the Civil Service Committee.[16]

Scarborough was one of a group of about 40 freshmen Republican legislators who dubbed themselves the "New Federalists" after The Federalist Papers. Scarborough was elected political director of the incoming legislators. The New Federalists called for sweeping cuts in the U.S. government, including plans to "privatize, localize, consolidate, [or] eliminate"[17] the Departments of Commerce, Education, Energy and Housing and Urban Development. Gingrich tapped Scarborough to head a Republican task force on education, and Scarborough declared, "Our goal is to get as much money, power, and authority out of Washington and get as much money, power, and authority into the classroom as possible."[6] Rep. John Kasich (R-Ohio), then chairman of the House Budget Committee, adopted Scarborough's language eliminating the federal Department of Education in the 1996 House Budget Resolution.[18] The budget passed the House by a vote of 238–193.[19]

Scarborough supported a number of anti-abortion positions while in Congress, including the Unborn Victims of Violence Act, that made it a crime to harm a fetus during the commission of other crimes.[20][21]

Scarborough sponsored a bill to force the U.S. to withdraw from the United Nations after a four-year transition[17] and voted to make the Corporation for Public Broadcasting self-sufficient[22] by eliminating federal funding. He also voted for the "Medicare Preservation act of 1995,"[23] which cut the projected growth of Medicare by $270 billion over ten years, and against the "Small Business Job Protection Act of 1996,"[24] which raised the minimum wage to $5.15. Scarborough had a conservative voting record on economic, social, and foreign policy issues but was seen as moderate on environmental issues and human rights causes, including supporting the closure of the School of the Americas and defending accused terrorist Lori Berenson.[6][25]

While in Congress, Scarborough received a number of awards, including the "Friend of the Taxpayer Award" from Americans for Tax Reform; the "Guardian of Small Business Award" from the National Federation of Independent Business; the "Spirit of Enterprise Award" from the United States Chamber of Commerce; the "Taxpayer's Hero Award" from the Citizens Against Government Waste; and the "Guardian of Seniors' Rights Award" from the 60 Plus Association.

"The left" sure has moved right.

Back at the very beginning of Trump's bid for the nomination, he would call into Scarborough's show and banter with them. They played along for the comedic value. But as Trump gained traction, they (Mika especially) started treating him more as a candidate than a crazy uncle, and called into question some of the outlandish things he was saying. At some point Trump decided they were no longer treating him "fairly" and lashed out, viciously and personally. That's when Joe Scarborough became an ardent Never Trumper.
