Delaware State University 'incensed' after lacrosse team's bus searched in Georgia

Doesn't such a search require probable cause, unless it is a checkpoint and EVERY vehicle is similarly searched?

I suppose they could say driving a little fast in the left lane is probable cause for a drug search, but that seems a stretch. A trooper stopped the bus for speeding and then he thought he smelled some weed in the air? I'd buy that explanation.

What's that suppposed to mean?

One of the greatest lacrosse players of all time was Jim Brown, at Syracuse (not an HBCU, though, but still).

Not sure what kind of defense he can come up with for that post.

Oh my god relax. That's the first thing I thought too. Isn't Delaware State an HBCU. Lacrosse? That's not a sport you associate with blacks. I looked it up and there are only four black players in all of major league lacrosse. I think of it as an east coast white sport with names like Thad

It was dumb of me. In the states you don't think of soccer as a black sport either, but two HBCUs have a rich tradition. Alabama A&M lost in the national championship game to UCONN and Howard has won a national championship or two

My understanding is that lacrosse is the fastest growing sport in the U.S. - at least that's what people who play lacrosse tell me. :>)

Lacrosse has its origins in games played by Native Americans. It was adopted and modified by European colonizers

Duckburg has a team. I have watched them practice they were playing catch across the field, looks like it would have been fun. They play a schedule that is heavy with Evansville High school teams. Best player I can name is Jim Brown.

I was great at Trac ball back in the day. Same shit right?

I read the sheriff said they did not search personal bags, but body cam shows them searching the players' duffles.

The officer that pulled them over said that it was for driving in the left lane, which is "no trucks". 6 or more wheels and air breaks is a truck he said. The law does say that but then specifically excludes buses.

It may be nothing was wrong, but the police are not helping their cause.

Years ago, two Purdue vans are driving through BFE southeast Texas when one van runs into the back of the other one. Locals show up and decide to act like hardasses. They haul both drivers down to "see the judge." Apparently the judge was not too pleased. He looked at the locals and said: "Let me get this straight. He was driving a van owned by Purdue and ran into the back of the other van owned by Purdue. Why the hell did you bring them down here? Seems to me they can sort this all out when they get back to Purdue!"

Oh, and this stop and search of the Delaware State lacrosse team bus is absolute bullshit, but par for the course down south.

Stop might have been okay, who knows, search was bullshit. Weird bus Noodle. White. Looks totally unmarked. No Delaware State written anywhere. Just all white with black tinted windows. Weird looking. But then once they saw it was a bunch of college kids and their coaches total bs.

too funny re the purdue vans running into each other. nightmare.

Move along…nothing to see here. Racism has been eradicated in this country.

This doesn't add up. I have trouble believing this came down as reported. Even bad cops know about probable cause for searches and dog sniffs.

But if this did happen as reported, the pay out in a Section 1983 case will be huge. I’m thinking low six figures per plaintiff. And then add in punies and attorneys fees. Big bucks.

Yes but that’s because the base is a small number. It’s like explaining how a company is up 567% on their third year of operation.

One of my MBA business law professors said he’d answer the phone anytime if we got in trouble, unless it meant we were in Louisiana. He implored us to never do business in Louisiana.

Sue the Neanderthals back to the Stone Age.

modern day pirates hoping they'd found their new dept bus??

wonder if the cops thought it might be rock/country band bus, thus likely at least some mj.

did anyone with the legal ability to do so consent to the search?

did the cops even ask for consent?

Daughter started playing this year. Other than knowing how they score, I am totally baffled by the game. Daughter took a ball to the face and had a minor cut over her eye. Girl who shot the ball got a yellow card for it. Apparently in the women's game you're not supposed to take a shot if an opponent is directly in your line of fire (except for the goalie). I also find it had to follow where the ball is.

I hate it. I understand it very little, so that may play a role in me hating it, but when there's very little the defense can do to dispossess a player of the ball unless they are passing it, I think it's dumb.

Yep. Daughter also told me that the women's sticks are not nearly as good as the men's. They've had to scrimmage the boy's team and she hated it because of that.

For real. Lacrosse is a game for wealthy wasps that can’t make the baseball team. Where are these kids supposed to go if black kids start playing Lacrosse en masse? Not good. Not good at all. It’s a delicate ecosystem already.

Not baseball. Football. I think the internal debate is whether to walk on to a patriot league football team or play lacrosse
