If it wasn't clear already, to be a big winner in basketball (and nearly every other modern sport) you have to score...a lot...
 
You need some combination of both. with some offensive improvement we can beat most anyone.
 
One way to look at it, in 2013 IU was darn good vs any other man v man team in the country but was knocked out solidly by zone defense.

If you can't defend you can't go far. And many a good defensive team have ended the hopes of good offense over the years. Certainly Butler could defend during their 2 year magical run.

To win championships? You need both. When was the last national champ that wasn't top 15 in both?

Look at 2016, IU was 6th in nation in offense. But 59th in D. Won a couple games in the tourney, but then gave up a 101 points to UNC in S16.
