Dedelow Selected in Ninth Round by the Chicago White Sox

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana outfielder Craig Dedelow was selected by the Chicago White Sox in the ninth round and the 267th overall pick of the 2017 MLB Draft on Tuesday afternoon.

A three-time Third Team All-Big Ten selection (2015-17), Dedelow opted to return for his senior season in Bloomington in 2017. Named IU's offensive MVP in 2016, Dedelow was selected in the 34th round of the 2016 MLB Draft by the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Dedelow becomes the 89th all-time draft pick at IU. Indiana, which has seen 17 of its players taken in the first 15 rounds since 2009, has now had 19 players selected in the last five years.

The Munster, Ind. native finished this season second in the Big Ten in home runs (19, T-16th nationally) and total bases (135), fourth in slugging percentage (.563) and fifth in RBI (54). In conference games only, he was second in home runs (8), tied for fourth in RBI (24), was sixth in slugging percentage (.528), and tied for ninth in total bases (53).

The 19 home runs for Dedelow this season put him in a tie for fifth place with Dough DeVore (1999) for most home runs in a single season by and IU player.

Dedelow finished his career with 16 home runs in conference games only, placing him fifth in program history. His eight home runs this season in league games only put him in a tie for seventh with Vasili Spanos (2003) and Doug DeVore (1999) for a single season.

For his career, Dedelow was a .289 hitter with 224 hits, 43 doubles, 31 home runs, and 135 RBI. In each of the previous two seasons, Dedelow led the Hoosiers in hits (76 in 2015; 70 in 2016) and total bases (116 in 2015; 105 in 2016). In 2016, The Munster, Ind. native led IU in batting average (.302), hits (70), doubles (16, 11th in the Big Ten), and runs scored (33), and was second in RBI (36).

Good for him for getting drafted, but as a senior with no leverage, I'll be he gets somewhere around 5000 or less signing money even though that slot is much more than that. Typically in rounds 7 to 10 teams draft senior players in an effort to save money so they can woo some later drafted kids with higher slot money.

However, it's still great to be drafted.

He has absolutely tore up the Pioneer League. In 33 games his line is .316/.358/.652 with a OPS of .990. 9 HRs. He's too advanced for that league. I'm sure his numbers will drop quite a bit moving up, but so far he's enjoying a good start to his professional career. The scary stat is 1 walk and 18 strikeouts. So he's gonna have to find a way to get on more and not strike out so much.
