I'm worried that Harris and Warren are both the best candidates, and unelectable in the Midwest.
How many midwesterners work for private insurance companies? That is a good-paying white collar job in many communities that need them. I don't love the industry, of course, but it just seems far-fetched to outright ban them.

I'm still onboard with Mayor Pete, or Klobuchar. I think a person from the Midwest is the best bet.

Main takeaway from last night's debate: If Biden had succeeded in stopping busing, Kamala Harris wouldn't be here today to derail his campaign.

Harris would need to focus on jobs.

How did Biden's handlers not prepare him for that attack?

Biden is an old school liberal who "accepted" racism. Did not necessarily like it, but accepted it as a reality that he should not mess with. That is not the modern Democratic belief. How team Biden did not prepare for the attack is almost mafeasance. But it does eliminate one of the ancient guard.

I really hope he gets the nominee. Seems like a moderate at heart that understands both sides through his experiences in life. Now...can he run a country? I'd say better than Trump, Hillary, or Biden.
Check out his parents politics!

Biden came close to handling the attack, iimo. Where he failed was the truth -- his goal was to handle institutional racism and he viewed busing as a bandaid, lottery tickets to the lucky few. Kamala was one of the lucky ones. WHat about the rest? It's worse than ever.

That's what he should have said. It's the inescapable truth.

According to reports, Biden is very hard to “handle”and prepare for debates. He thinks his experience counts for everything and he is stubborn.

Leave it to the states was the exact argument made by segregationist. I am not at all certain how one defeats racism by leaving the path to the racists. Truman's order integrating the military only impacted some, blacks in the military. But that contact allowed those blacks to show those whites they were equal. And those connections spread farther out after they were made. In theory, bussing may have done the same.

What good are integrated schools if virtually none of them are integrated?

Good points. I'm no expert but my understanding is segregated housing was rampant at the time of these busing debates. To me institutionalized racism has at its heart housing segregation, along with workplace, financial and such. It all starts at home. CoH often makes a legitimate point about these problems not having been solved yet. What if the focus had been on institutionalized racism instead of busing? I don't know. That's probably far-fetched but in addition to your points I get the POV of busing glossing over the real, systemic problem.

Haven't been on this board for over a week I think so this thread: tl;dr. So having watched all of both nights, I'll give my very superficial impressions. Which, let's face it, that's what the first debate is about anyway. The separating of the wheat from the chaff.

1st night:
Castro: Should be taken more seriously than he has been so far. But I've liked him since before he announced.

Beto: stick a fork in the guy.

Warren: fairly strong showing I thought. She had a long run there without any face time, but when she spoke I liked what I heard. I haven't really been in her camp and I still wouldn't say I am, but I'm warming up to her.

Klobuchar: Pretty strong, but I've never viewed her as a realistic possibility as the nominee, and I still don't.

Inslee: Passionate about the Climate Crisis, as am I, but got a little creepily bug-eyed a few times. Won't be the next POTUS. I'd comfortably bet the house on it.

Gabbard: My first opportunity to hear her speak on camera, and I was more impressed than I thought I would be. Won't be the next POTUS, but still...

Delaney: Who? I mean, he wasn't bad, but dude. Too many candidates. Some somebody's have got to go.

Ryan: See Delaney. But worse. Disappointed here too, because there was a time I had high hopes for him.

de Blasio: Was more impressed than I expected to be. Yeah he was a loud mouth and butted in more than he probably should have, but can't blame him given his outsider stature coming into this. He got face time and exuded passion. Might hang around a little longer than I previously thought he would.

2nd night:
Williamson: lulz

Hick: I like the guy. I really do. And I think he'd probably do a decent job as POTUS. But he's just hopelessly lost in the shuffle, and his performance last night didn't change that.

Yang: lulz

Mayor Pete: predictably, he was very well spoken and turned in a good performance. I though he held up well. But this thing with the cop in SB - the exchange about that didn't help him. His words around that were quite well crafted, expectedly, but that issue might sink him.

Joe: ouch. The current front-runner is predictably so vulnerable. Not a good night for the former VP and it could have been worse, frankly.

Bernie: the same old thing from Bernie. You either "feel the Bern" or you dont. Nothing changed there.

Harris: the star of the 2nd night. I like her. I really do. The "food fight" interjection was brilliant, if scripted. Even if it was scripted, it was brilliant foresight to know an opportunity was going to present itself to drop it. Beyond that, she just presents herself as a cut above. I like her. I think she could beat tRump. I'm a fan. I know, the about-face on Medicare-for-all....whatever. It's early...

Gillibrand: Kind of annoying how she was such a loudmouth, but like Mayor Bill, she needed to do it strategically, and it might have worked. Might have gained her a few percentage points. And I don't dislike her. But she won't be the next POTUS.

Bennet: lulz

Swalwell: double-lulz. He came off like a Jimmy Fallon performance on SNL. seriously.

Main takeaway for me, all jokes aside: Trump's going to win if Biden can't get his act together.
  • Democrats worked for decades to create health care (Obamacare) and they already want to throw it away for "socialism."
  • Democrats are now advocating "open borders." (Castro decriminalizing "illegal" entry.)
Republicans are going to have a field day. Dumb, dumb, dumb.

Running a minority woman and a gay man might not be your best combination if you want to beat Trump - and I know you do.
Who freaking knows. I never thought we would elect a black man in my lifetime, yet alone have one carry Indiana. And I never in my wildest dreams thought we'd elect a carnival barker, either.

I thought we’d elect a back man and a woman as President during my lifetime for sure. We’re halfway there. I don’t think that combination is going to complete that thought.

Kamala doing the backstroke again...

Come on KH, heed Bernie’s call and take a stand. Most of your opponents are very clear on their socialist stances, why so apprehensive?
The question was would they give up "THEIR" private health insurance - which is entirely different that abolish private health insurance. I believe she said private health insurance would be available as a supplement.

Kamala Harris is an impressive candidate. Smart. Tough. Quick on her feet. Telegenic. Disciplined. Driven.

Not that anyone's asking, but a Harris-Buttigieg ticket would combine what look like the Democrats' most talented candidates. I think there'd be a lot of excitement there.

But it's still very early.

Come on you guys, I am tickled to death with your candidates, but other than offering free stuff they could not handle the day to day stress off running a laundry mat! I would be embarrassed if that’s all I had to choose from and if you agree with any of their positions there is something serious wrong with you!

I don't understand why you or your loathsome posts remain on this board.
You know Rock, you’re right since the mods and every one else on this board is liberal, It should be called the liberal Cooler!

Only loathsome when it puts a dent in your side, right?

It’s called being fully vetted. You can do it all day. Well, guess what? So can I.

Why don’t you look into her locking down decades of pedophelia cases involving the Catholic Diocese in California? Or, should I not mention that?

Sorry, when you stick your neck out to run for President, it’s all game - as you might have noticed. Or, have you?
