Until I see something official from IU, I don't think it's fair or justified to say he is leaving the program because he isn't starting. I'm sure he's disappointed, but after transfering for his least year and one week from the start of the season, I would give Dawkins benefit of the doubt that he isn't just taking his ball and going home, but rather bucking up, working hard and being ready as he is surely smart enough to know you are always one play away in College FB.

He is still playing catch up to learn the offense yet is competing well enough to have coaches wanting to give him a package to get on the field. He is also said to be improving in his passing and could win the job as the goes along.

There are posters that do nothing but stir up trouble with no real info to back up with what they say. It certainly seems Dawkins rumors is another example of that.

Dawkins has to be wise enough to realize that he will get his chance. The problem with being young, though, is you rarely have the wisdom to correctly understand that.

Dawkins can’t really showcase his abilities unless he is in a position to break open field tackles. I don’t think that was a part of any of the scrimmages. If so, it would be reasonable for him to be doing some second guessing. Catch 22.

I am reminded of CAM sitting point guards last season who were a bit too adventurous.

This is true and I'm sure he feels he didn't get to showcase his strengths. He should be given some time in game 1 if at all possible.

Hope it’s only rumors, but if he’s actually leaving, I would maybe take that as him being behind Penix, and not just Ramsey at the moment. It’s one thing to transfer and not win the starting job at the beginning of the season, but transferring and being #3 would be a hard pill to take.

Another internet rumor murdered by actual reporting of likely facts.

MTIOTF...you are an internet IU FB treasure...! I think back over the last 20+ years since Bruce's site...you have always been funny on the money. I used to be Teranodon...as long as there are people like you around here, I keep coming back...kudos.

He’s gonna play and play a lot. This “starter” thing is always just a formality. QBs get nicked and have poor games. It will happen. And, every season, there are major injuries in game #1. That’s not just IU. It’s going to happen across the nation. Dawkins will be an important part of the offense and the starter thing is fluid with young guys. Where it becomes not so fluid is with guys that are 3 year starters and perform at a high level as they progress. That is not the case at IU. We are young with QB in this system. Dawkins is new to it.

I remember you too

Bruce Strom’s Indiana football site seems like so many years ago.

Oops. It was.

And my “internet smartass” streak remains unbroken!

Well I'll be a horn swoggled! That is great to hear. Been a long time since sitting in the stadium at practice listening to Coach Mallory with Bruce, EZ, and a bunch if great people that loved IU FB. So much water under the bridge...Bruce paid his dues imo. This site is better for his presence...also imo.

Not to toot my own horn, but I was a member of Bruce's board, too. I think I was probably 21 or 22 when I joined his board, I'm 43 now!!

I’m glad Bruce is still around (he started this thread).
that is great to know. Remember when we had the weekly pools to pick the actual score of the game? I got onboard in either 1997 or 1998.

Notwithstanding the fact that he's already earned a degree, I'd be shocked if he were to bolt literally days before the start of the season. He's gone to the trouble of relocating, has put in several weeks of hard work and, regardless of the announcement that Ramsey's #1 at this point, he's going to play.

Yep. Only place he is going is to Miami. On the team plane.

Put up your virtual dollars then and state if you know something or following (or starting?) rumors. It makes no sense he’d leave a week before season and what just quit football? Are you serious?

I sure hope it's not the case but Jeff George jr just transferred from MI to Pittsburgh (after having transferred from IL to MI just a few short months ago...) The player risks being labeled a bit of a flying squirrel but it can be done...

Personally, I think if Dawkins has any NFL aspirations then he'd be begging to be utilized as a hybrid RB/Receiver, along with being an option style QB in specific yardage packages...

Guess we'll soon see how it all pans out.

*[and I have zero/none/nada "inside info"]*

Felt I should come back to my original string here given news has broken. It turns out where there was smoke there was fire. It seems a bit mind-boggling to me that he would make this decision so close to the start of the season and seemingly jeopardize his ability to play, unless somehow, someway, another school could still accept him now?

Nothing is guaranteed in life, including that ANY starting QB won't be injured. This would seem like short-term thinking on his part. Barring he was somehow told he was "guaranteed" the starting job, which I highly doubt, I don't think this is a good look for him.

I wanted to defend his integrity, character and work ethic as I couldn't believe this was possible. The disappointment I understand, the actual decision leaves me perplexed. But as always, wish him well in his future.

I am a believer in Ramsey still. And I'm OK with Penix now being the #2 on deck. And yes, I actually DO think Reese Taylor could step in at #3 and have a chance to be ARE 2.0.

Stay strong IU. Tough week with Ellison and now this, but I trust the character of the coaching staff, the players and the program. Focus on the work you've done and the work ahead. Dawkins never played a down for IU, so we've got the guys who are truly committed and really not a TON changes other than RB situation, where I also think there are guys ready to step up.

Could he transfer and sit out this season I wonder, or is he just done? I agree kind of a crazy move considering the season starts this week! Jeff George Jr. just pulled this stunt too, crazy

I couldn't have been more wrong about this, and kudos to Johnsy who clearly had some reliable inside information.

There's no way to sugarcoat this - - this is an unfortunate (and potentially devastating) development for the 2018 season. The chances we'll need Penix in more than four games just increased exponentially, and then it's Pabst on tap (pun intended). Finally, the coaches may need to move Taylor back to the offense.

Hoping and praying that everyone stays healthy. Yikes, go Hoosiers.

Really didn’t want to be correct on this, but I think this says a lot more about Dawkins than it does IU. Look back at some of his interviews, “I know I won’t be handed anything, I’m just here to do anything I can to help the team” yea right.
I was told last Thursday he cleaned out his room, he wasn’t present at the scrimmage/walk through Friday and it became official yesterday. Obviously this hurts depth, but Ramsey had a great camp and Penix is the real deal just needs experience. Hopefully we don’t have a Maryland-like run of QB injuries.

I'm reminded now of Roberson leaving when had he stayed he likely would have been starting in a bowl game that year and right back in the mix. Short-term thinking here personified by the young man.

I don't think Dawkins was "guaranteed" the starting job nor do I think without having a spring season that he was looking anywhere close to the top of his game. If he can't realize that being a "pro" in life means being ready to go if/when your number is called and keep working, not 100% sure he's the right fit for the IU culture and program. Hate to sound "good riddance" because I wanted him to stay and thought the rumors were even mean-spirited making him seem like a quitter.

Unlike Roberson when two QB's left and we played Covington!...we have two legit QB's and some good walk ons and last year's Mr. Football of Indiana. I'm still bullish.

I'm reminded now of Roberson leaving
I'm also reminded of that (his departure in June now seems almost reasonable in comparison) but not because he missed an opportunity to quarterback a bowl team. It's because the 2014 season turned into a shitshow as a result of his departure.

No reason not to keep our head up. I always felt Ramsey would start...I like the kid. Depth gets weaker in experience but maybe not talent. RB concerns me more, as does the oline. But theres plenty of line to chew nails on that later.

I think Dawkins got bad info and followed that with a bad decision to come to IU. Nothing evil about that. I wish him well but I would think DII is his best route to playing now. Eligibility, I have no idea.

And Dawkins simply did not have the props to be guaranteed anything but a chance here imo.

Oops....

You misspelled OOOOOOPPPPPPS.

When logic and reason fail, I'm lost.

Glad I'm NOT a betting man.

I hope the kid has solid plans and quitting like this doesn't turn into a problem.

Also hope he doesn't claim he was promised a start.

But ... the season is coming at us hard and fast ...

Maybe it does, Johnsy, but right now I'd rather have a skilled, experienced 22 year old with an attitude as the #2 as opposed to a kid who's never taken a snap in a college game.
He has an attitude alright, and who ever said he was #2 on the depth chart ?

Do you all think the plan was for Taylor to get serious minutes on defense? I'm hoping we have a solid #6 guy at corner, and that if CTA moves Taylor exclusively to the offensive bench that it won't hurt our depth at corner too much.

I still cant believe how quickly that season and our stable of good QBs quickly went south. People still say Wilson couldn't recruit QBs...hell, we had too many then! Then boom baby...and your playing a guy so deep on the charts when he walked on the field fans went...whaaaat??

I think that was the beginning of the end for Wilson...attitudes changed.

It's looking more and more like Allen doesn't think he needs an explosive offense. Control the ball and try to win by 3.
