David Ellis calling it a day here due to reoccurring injury...

Yikes, we’re already thin there. He would’ve been, health permitting, one of the few guys at that spot with any IU experience. As it is, only Shivers has layer much, and that was a few years ago. Have to hope we’re at least healthy.

The good news is camp is about to get fired up so we will start hearing progress updates and depth chart info almost every day......the downside is we are going to start hearing about injuries and transfers too. Either way, we should be in for an exciting month before we finally kick things off 5 weeks from this weekend!

There is literally no one else reporting this. Brockway hasn’t even tweeted it out. Odd.
I read basically the same story in the Goshen and Kokomo news feeds... I didn't link them because it was almost word for word the same article...

If true, this sucks. Always thought he had something none of our other RBs had. Elusive and speed. Sad day if he’s really done.
I agree but football is a brutal sport. I understand he has injuries, some will linger for years, doesn’t want to make them worse, etc. Hope he is really close to a degree if he loses his scholarship

David Ellis will always be one of my favorites. My wife and I were at Jiffy Treat in the summer of 2019, and she said, "I bet that guy plays football." I said no, and she said, "look at his legs!" Holy cow was he ready to play college football on day one. We briefly chatted with him and welcomed him to Indiana. We were stunned when the kid we met scored a 2 point conversion in the first game against Ball State. We always cheered extra hard for David. I hope he has a wonderful and healthy life!

Further expanding on this...I told my wife that David was done playing, and I actually started crying. I was shocked, and trying to figure out why. As we were talking about it, I realized that what I loved about David was that he was a college kid. We met him when he was an incoming freshman from Michigan, getting some ice cream with some non-athlete students that he probably met at orientation. You could tell immediately that David would never be a kid that got into a sniff of trouble. It also felt nice to make David feel welcome at this giant B1G university.

The irony is that when we went to the Nebraska game that year in Lincoln, David waved to us. It was a crazy thing that in this crazy crowd so far from home, we were not alone because David had returned the favor of making us feel welcome.

David represented what I loved about college football. He said, "oh wow, you're really going to the game?" - like he didn't deserve or expect anything for being a college football player. He was playing to play. He wasn't playing for NIL. It was about his college and his team. It was about the excitement of attending and representing INDIANA. My heart breaks that he was unable to stay healthy throughout his career, but David will probably be my personal tombstone for when college football, as I knew and loved it, officially succumbed to the greedy cesspool.

Hate that we are losing guys before the season even starts, especially since they were projected to make a productive impact! Starting the next man up mentality early! Praying the injury bug stays away from everyone else, but this program seems snake bit with a bad luck curse!
Btw, could this open up a couple schollys for some late transfers in the portal? Now that kids can transfer more than once???

The good news is that he can't lose his Scholarship money due to injury per the INDIANA Student Athlete Bill of Rights (that's been in force since 2018)

The ligaments in his ankle are so damaged that he’ll never be able to stay on the field for long without “re-injuring” it. He’s already had surgery but there’s just no fix for this. Grant Hill retired from basketball for basically the same reason. Stinks for DE.

Will the staff look to the transfer portal to fill a hole in the RB room with this news?
They might, but there’s not much chance of adding quality depth at this point. The issue isn’t really getting guys on the field so much as making sure that they can practice / prepare at full capacity, including running the scout team stuff. You need bodies for that and, as guys get banged up during the season, you need ample numbers to make sure you can run everything you want to during the week.

When an opening occurs at a school, if an athlete saw this and felt it represented a good opportunity for him, could he then enter the portal?

I hate it for David Ellis and wish him the best especially after reading about some of the memories—shared by others—about this young man!

After two injury plagued seasons, I thought any on the field contributions Ellis could make to the current team was a bonus, but not an expectation.

We have 5 RBs on scholarship. You don’t get to this level if you weren’t a good player. Iron sharpens iron and the opportunity is there to stand out. I think there is at least 2 RB’s to handle the bulk of the running load this season. Next man up!

For some reason, I can imagine a few top-flight MAC running backs are paying attention to this. Maybe even a good one from around here.

Markese Stepp is available and from the Indy area. That said, we’d be something like the 11th school he transfers to and the dude was in the class of 2018. Maybe Red Grange has some eligibility left?

He could, but the time has passed for said player to be eligible for this upcoming season, so anyone that would transfer here after entering thos late would have to sit until next season.

My take as well. Robbed of much of his potential and a loss of depth for us as well.

What’s the cut off date for immediate eligibility? Makes sense that the NCAA would draw a firm line in the sand to recent after-camp transfers when guys get beat out for starting positions.
