It seems like he's a guy that's largely flown under the radar. But there seems to be some smoke on him being the guy...so lets discuss him.
I think he's probably a solid choice, but there are a few concerns I'd have with him.
1. How much of his recent success was attributed to his son? They seemed to fall off a fair bit when Tucker got hurt this year. That isn't abnormal, he's really good, and most college programs fall off when their best player goes down...but if you take his last 3 years at Drake away, he doesn't have a lot to go off of.
2. He never won the Valley regular season championship. He won 20+ games every year, and fielded really good Valley level teams, but he never won the league.
3. Mixed results in post season tournaments. On one hand, he won some Valley tournaments, which is good. But then, he hasn't won any NCAA tournament games. The success in the Valley tournaments is probably a good sign with respect to IU...as it shows he's able to get them playing well, and beating, peer opponents, in March. IU's peer opponents, hopefully, will be top 15-20 level teams every year. So if he can beat his peers at IU, probably will mean some NCAA success on top of B10 success.
I'd MUCH rather have McCollum than DeVries. I'd much rather have guys like McCasland, Beard, May...obviously some of the whales. But I think I'd rather have DeVries than Brownell types. But that is more of a "feeling" than anything else. I haven't committed really any time studying his philosophies, offenses, defenses, etc... Has anyone on here?
