If they're any good at all they'll see the field.
At this level it's all about winning football games not giving out "participation" trophies.

I think this rule will come into play when games have been decided. Do you reward the veteran with playing time or do give a freshman or sophomore a tryout. Games that have been decided could turn into freshman football games.j

I'm ecstatic about this rule change. Not only does it provide an opportunity for true freshmen to experience some playing time without burning a year of eligibility, it's a hedge against injuries at a key position. I'm superstitious so, in the case of IU, I'm not going to mention the particular position I'm thinking of, but I'm glad we've got the option of playing a certain freshman if need be.
If you are thinking like me Penix could end up being the starter sooner than anyone thinks. Last year I had the same feeling about Ellison.
The Big upside for IU and a whole lot of other teams not named Alabama or "the" O$U is that suddenly you have depth at many positions where in the past you had to keep the guy off the field to keep from burning his Redshirt.
That and suddenly everyone on the team has a legit shot at least a little PT if they show any real ability to compete..., which is gonna take practice efforts up about 5 notches... I think this will help us a lot.
Should be interesting to see how TA uses their 4 game shelf lifes... I'm guessing 1 early and 3 late (when, in the past we've really needed help depth-wise due to injuries)...
