Alabama just unveiled their money making program called The Advantage. Read on footballscoop.com. The marketing wars have started and we better be ready!

for sure. no choice but to get on board. and i'm glad to see the kids get paid. everyone else certainly is, but this will get ugly and be one more thing to make college athletics less appealing.

Here is the new opening recruiting line " son if you come to Alabama and never play a snap you will leave here with 100 thousand dollars in your pocket"

I'm starting to lose interest big time in college sports. All these student-athletes that are graduating in 3 years: I call b*******.
What about the students who aren’t athletes who graduate in three years. Is that BS too? High school students earn college credits for some of their HS classes and can start college with enough credits to help them graduate early.

We will struggle to match dollars with most conference teams for the players we normally recruit

When I was in college the drinking age was 18. Everybody was on the five-year plan.

I guess this is progress?
I think I would rather have the pros develop their own minor leagues and have college stay amateur.
But if that were to happen I understand that the quality of college play would plummet. Maybe we, me included, would lose interest.
Bottom line I guess is that a free college diploma and even masters is not enough payment in todays thinking.

I think college athletes vastly over value their impact on the brand. I didn't buy any IU shirt or hat, or ticket, etc because of a player or name on the back of a jersey.

I am an IU fan, not of any individual athlete that wears an IU uniform. The NCAA football game was successful because it was a fun game to play, and people could turn their favorite program into a dynasty. I couldn't care less who the players were and what "likeness" was being used.

If Zion Williamson had played at southeast directional sisters of the poor, he would have still probably made a name for himself nationally. But not nearly as much as he did at Duke. Playing at a marquee brand gave him millions of dollars worth of free marketing and brand development for the next level.

The reality is that there will be a relative handful of kids who will be able to legitimately take advantage of this. All the rest is just talk and recruiting violations that are now legal.

It'll be no different than in pro sports. A few stars will make money and the rest will toil away in obscurity. Nobody signs the left guard or the 3rd leading scorer on the basketball team to ad deals.

i recall Cris Collinsworth yrs ago on Indy talk sports radio once talking about the strike yr in the NFL. (1987 iirc).

he said he decided to venture into the stadium during one of the replacement player games to get a gauge on things.

he went on about one of the replacement players making a great play, and how the fans all instantly rose to their feet and cheered wildly.

he said at that moment he knew it was all about the jersey, and not the player.

Here is the Alabama model, each kid will have his pix at a car dealer/business and will get paid x amount of dollars per year. That's gonna be the minimum then the stars will go on top of that with their likeness/ jerseys etc

Maybe the next move is for programs being able to trade players. We will send a backup receiver for a good running back. I'm joking, of course, but sometimes I see moves that could help the team.

This will spiral out of control very quickly. It won't take much innovation to create loopholes big enough to drive trucks through. Even the most marginal players will be getting money to have their pictures on the side of milk cartons.

Going to college did more for Zion Williamson's brand than anything else he could have done. Going to one year of college made him, conservatively, 20 million more on his 1st nba contract and a 15 million dollar a year shoe contract. Duke did 10000x more for him than he did for them.

But these guys are being advised to go play in some half @$$ league for $500k and nobody sees them or cares about anything that they do for a year.

Also, I have always considered the G league far more exploitive than anything the NCAA does. There are a handful of players that make good money, but most are making below 40k - that's a decent/livable income for someone single in their early 20s, but those same players most likely would be getting 5x or more playing in Europe. The G league only exists so that there is a pool of players available for rapid callups, not for any real development. The NBA preys on their desire to play in the NBA, but only like 10-15% of G league players get called up for 10 day contracts in a given season, and even fewer get something more long term.

Well stated, couldn't agree with you more.

It is good IMO that players will have a chance to earn money that only the schools could in the past. The problem is without any real leadership on NIL it will be the wild west with the big market schools reaping the benefits.

How much are the schools investing in scholarships monies, expanded facilities and shoe wear?

Not only in scholarships and facilities and shoes but clothes, electronics, medicine, wellness, strength and conditioning, nutrition and by the way it is my understanding that division 1 athletes are already paid $20-25 k a year. Then think about gifts the players receive for going to bowl games.

I'd give them all a salary. Let them pay their room and board from that. Then give them 1099s for gear, tutors, healthcare, travel, tickets, food, etc. They'll beg for their scholarships back.

They want to be treated like grownups.....treat 'em like grownups.

I was just enlightened a few weeks ago that they do receive a salary of $20 -25k a year. On top of all the other perks. I wish I had gotten paid to play and go to college.

Best player gets the same as the worst? Socialism at its best! LOL
Absolutely! These players cry on a out inequality and maltreatment by the ncaa ‘machine’ it seems the ‘fairest’ thing to do is toss all the $ in a pot and divvy it out equally to the same oppressed girl athletes on the archery team. After all, it’s not their fault they were born girls and as such have no opportunity to play big money sports like football or mens bball.
.
What about athletes who receive no scholarship and are already at a disadvantage against those who already get a free ride? Do they get paid? Who determines the pot the money comes out of? Is it the same for every university?
.
Bad athletic teams are pretty much responsible for the big stats better players roll up on them. How much do the bad teams get for helping them? The SEC fb teams purposely set up easy games on or abt the eighth game of their schedule to keep the SEC ’fresh’ for the playoffs. Sure, the university gets paid a million bucks to get whalloped but without their crappy players sec qbs and receivers stand the chance to lose ‘deserved’ money by having to play a tougher team.

The real fun will be determining how much an O$U qb ‘deserves’ to be paid over the top point guard on their bball team. How does one determine ‘the best’? Is the qb the best bc he has a decent o-line? If so, how much of a cut do they get for protecting him?
Is it based on name recognition? Stats? Shirt sales?
.
anyway, it’ll all end up in the courts bc of lawsuits filed by the rowing team and the court’ll determine every player gets an equal share. I’m no fan of players getting paid by any means but I do love to watch the destruction of perfectly corrupt institutions because they didn’t have the balls to stand up for themselves but instead bend over to a bunch of 20 year olds.

There are many problems that haven't been dealt with for NILs to work. I think it is going to be a mess for a number of years before everything is worked out.

Folks, this is a hypothetical situation. No need to get disturbed about it.
