Is there any college fanbase in America that can rival the IU basketball fanbase in their continued passionate support of an athletic program that has failed to deliver consistant results in over 3 decades.
With NIL I believe IU can afford to experiment with prioritizing actual coaching over recruiting in the hiring of a coach. Count me as one who formerly believed that recruiting was everything.
Crean, Miller, Woodson. Not one can coach. No more marketing of deflections as some unique coaching insight. No more hockey line substitution patterns. No more isolation for players Ill equipped to create off the dribble.
Carmelo Anthony was one of Woody"s advocates. Why? Because he didn't burden Melo with coaching restrictions.
With NIL now more influential to recruiting than a charismatic coach, we can do a hard substantive reset as to the philosophy of our flailing program.
Let us not overcomplicate things. Any moron could communicate the following insights other than those in control of the IU program these many years..
1.) Let us prioritize shooting over vertical leap with play calls that allow for unobstructed shooting opportunities
2.) Be mindful that some of the necessary skill players on the team will want NBA opportunities and devise a hybrid system of team ball with free flowing offense accordingly.
3.) Recognize that IU basketball is not all that anymore. I laugh when I remember the legitimate discussion that Coach K would be eager to embrace the opportunity to take over the IU program once BK retired.
4.) Recognize that their is no Bob Knight coaching tree but there are still some coaches from Indiana or with Indiana ties that still recall what IU basketball can be. Accept that the few who recall IU' s glory days are left conversing with one another on this board and Peegs.
I don't know a lot about the ISU coach but the more I learn the more I like him. He has been able to elevate his players within a coaching system that allows his players to thrive within a team structure.
That said we all know IU will not hire a coach like this. He looks like a guy I drink with at the Office Lounge, wears goofy glasses and doesn't use face tanner. He coaches at ISU and I fear that IU believes themselves far more advanced and sophisticated than to benefit from anything produced within Terre Haute Indiana.
Maybe the guy is a flash in the pan. I truly don't know. Those like Bloom I'm sure may know more. However, maybe it's time to prioritize substance over marketing in the pro active hiring of our next coach.
Let us begin again with the best XO coach we can find no matter where he is or what ESPN says about him. Bloom has said Tonagel here in Indiana is worth a try. Dusty May seems to coach well and may be more palatable to IU. He is better looking, has IU connections and has been on ESPN more.
We don't have the luxury of laughing anymore.
