I will be posting updates from Coach Wilson's Radio Show. Player guests tonight are TE Michael Cooper and LB T.J. Simmons.
Fischer asks Simmons about the defensive performance against PSU and Simmons said they are just trying to build consistency and stay on their keys and make plays.
Simmons said the defense has gotten a lot stronger since he arrived at IU and they have really improved their physicality. He said they are trying to create turnovers.
Fischer asks Cooper about why he transferred to IU from Arizona and he said when Seth Littrell went to IU from Arizona that made IU attractive to him.
Fischer asks about the offense struggling and Cooper said there are no excuses and they need to be more physical. He said the injuries are not an excuse.
Cooper said they played two good defenses but that is not an excuse either because he feels they are good enough to play with good defenses.
Cooper said his role has changed a little bit this year. He said he is primarily a run blocker but he is involved a little more in the pass game.
Simmons is majoring in liberal arts. He is asked about the transition from HS academics to college academics and Simmons said college demands so much more of your time. He is asked about his social life during the season and he said it is mainly school and football.
Cooper is a business major. He was academic all-Big Ten last year. He is not sure what he will do with his degree.
Simmons said he is interested in being a strength and conditioning coach and a football coach. Cooper said he is not interested in coaching even though coaching is in his family.
Cooper's grandfather is John Michels and he played at Tennessee and in the NFL and he is in the College Football Hall of Fame.
Fischer asks about Rutgers and Simmons said their offense has a lot of weapons and that their record is misleading. He said they have some explosive players and they have a good group of running backs that do different things. Simmons said he prefers RBs that run inside. Cooper said that defensively Rutgers is good at stopping the run.
Simmons said biggest character on team is Adarius Rayner. Cooper said that Shawn Heffern is the biggest character on the team.
That is it for the players. Coach Wilson is coming up.
Wilson has video guys on the show tonight. He said they have 5 cameras filming every practice. He said that when he goes on recruiting trips he is able to watch the day's practice on his I-pad. He said the video guys do an awesome job. He said when they try to brand the program in recruiting almost all of it is done by their video guys. Joel Baron is the head video guy and he is very good guy.
Wilson is asked about PSU game and he said that what concerns him is they didn't have a good enough plan and they didn't have the energy they needed. He said injuries are not an excuse and that injuries happen and they have to play through that.
He thought the team played hard through the first 3 games and at Wake Forest and against OSU but not against PSU and he is embarrassed by that.
Wilson is asked about Danny Cameron coming in with no experience and Wilson said they needed to support him better. He said Cameron will be good to go this week and he is not sure about Sudfeld's availability. He said Nate is practicing but he is still not where they want him to be and he will be a game time decision. He said Diamont will be limited and probably not available.
Wilson said that his team has played two great defenses in the conference and so has Rutgers in PSU and MSU. He said he was disappointed by the lack of plays and lack of energy by the offense against PSU. He said they have looked hard at their plan and how they are using guys. He said they are looking hard at their kicking game to get more plays there. He said they are just misfiring a little bit right now.
Wilson is asked about his confidence in his team making it to a bowl game. He said they have to get to 6 wins first and they need to get this one this weekend. He thinks his team is a good team and he believes they can make a bowl game but they have to get two more wins first.
Wilson is asked about keeping the team mentally tough with injuries while playing in the Big Ten East. He said they have to continue to create energy no matter what happens even if it is negative. He said you feel for the injured players but at the same time things happen and you have to keep fighting. He didn't think the team fought last week like they had been earlier in the season.
Wilson is asked about Rutgers and their own adversity and he said they are a very talented team. Defensively they are long and athletic and they make you work. He said offensively they do good things. He said their WR (Carroo) is one of the best in the nation and one of the best returners in the nation. He said he is anxious to see if his team is ready to compete.
He said on defense Rutgers does some things with their alignments that make it tough on an offense. He said they did a great job against MSU and made MSU play up-hill. He said they will be a tough match-up but he likes their plan for the game.
Wilson is asked about using Mike Majette more at RB and Wilson said he is an athletic guy that could play different spots and he is in the mix. He said that as a young guy they don't want to put too much on him.
Wilson said that Devonte Williams was injured early enough that he could get a medical redshirt if they want to.
Wilson is asked about the punting situation and if they will ever have a punter that punts the ball more than 15 yards. Here is your idiot question of the night. Wilson took the high line and said Erich Toth has been solid. He said that he misses punts like some guys do but he has been solid this year.
Wilson said that most scholarship kickers actually don't make it and don't be what they are projected to be. He said that kicking in HS is so much different than kicking in college.
Wilson is asked about how he likes his eggs and he said he likes his eggs over easy or sunny side up kind of guy.
Fischer asks about Nick Mangieri and Zack Shaw and Wilson said they are playing well. He said their desire to play well is significantly higher than it was when they came in. Wilson said Mangieri is 6th in the nation in sacks. Wilson said that what impresses him about Shaw and Mangieri is even though he is not sure they are better than they were 4 years ago they are playing so hard.
Wilson said they have worried a little about over practicing because of the injuries and he said they have done some things recently that is almost spring ball like because he wants the coaches to see some of the young guys. He said that Tuesdays and Wednesdays are the heavy practice days during the week.
Wilson said the young DBs are doing well but they need to keep coaching them up. He said he lets the position coaches are the head coaches of their group and he lets them decide who plays and he lets them decide who they recruit.
Wilson said that he has seen some things that he is getting tired of seeing and he is sick of waiting on some guys to step up and he has told his coaches that.
Wilson said the team needs to play better and they need to do a better job for the fans. He didn't necessarily like being applauded for the OSU game but he appreciated it. He was disappointed in how his team played at PSU and wants his team to play hard this weekend like the 1945 team did that they are recognizing and he wants everyone to be proud of the team.
