I'm not sure of the significance of this stat. I guess our schedule included a lot of bad freethrow shooting teams. When I played basketball in the 70s, players at all levels spent a lot of time practicing free throws and did so continuously as long as they were playing competitively. I always likened it to the way golfers practice putting. As long as you played basketball, you worked on free throw shooting. It doesn't appear to me that in today's game free throw shooting competence is emphasized or required. There are a few players that obviously focus on it and are knock-down free throw shooters but the majority of players aren't very skilled or accomplished at free throw shooting
