Chicago politics and events

Its not even that cold anymore. Trust me, I know: this winter I built a backyard ice rink for my son. We got a total of three days use out of it so far during that polar vortex pre-Christmas. Since then: mid-30s and 40s (grey and overcast, of course). Global warming is real!
Yeah no kidding. Very strange. It's been like 60 here for what feels like weeks. WTF. Finally cooling down now i think.

you can tell I've been living in the burbs forever...the thought of "casinos" bring "nice new elements" to neighborhoods....my brain hurts trying to process that data. I guess I have a different view of 'neighborhoods'.
You think there is something wrong with destitute, drunk, gambling addicts flocking to the north side to gamble with easy access to the wealthiest neighborhoods in the city?

Don’t get me wrong. No one enjoys a night at the casino more than me. I don’t love the idea of one down the block from me however.

But alas, who needs nice little eateries and pubs, tree lined streets, young families when you can pave over all of that and invite in zombies to fleece for tax revenue. We can then throw that tax revenue down the CPS rabbit hole. A win/ win.

God the traffic is going to be unreal around there. Hell, it is now.

Looks like the closest el stop is the Blue Line, Grand stop. .0.7 miles. Ouch.

LIttle mom and pop eateries and pubs are the character and heart of a town. My favorite hangout here was replaced with a Jimmy Johns. Doesn't get much worse

Cold and snowy winter in Denver—so far. Some snowfall records have fallen. Another dump going on as I write this. California is getting pounded with precip.

it's just a strange pattern this winter (so far). ORD only reporting 6" snow total to this point, yet 300 miles to the northwest- MSP has already surpassed 60". And the crappy rain/slush storm we have coming in tonight will dump another 10" in central/northern WI. The storm path and rain/snow line continues to ride just north of us. We've been transitioning from a La Nina to an el Nino pattern over the past few months (at least that's what the weenies at NWS say).

The ski resorts in Utah are having a banner year. Already over 400" at Alta. It's a stubborn pattern this year that doesn't want to break. I'm predicting the same thing that happened in 2021...we'll get an entire winter's worth (40") the first 3 weeks of Feb.

Honestly I'm ready for sunny and 75. After New Years I have little use for snow other than to fire up my snowblower which is gathering dust and cobwebs in the garage.

Saint Louis metro population has doubled since 1950. The city is tiny and has been run by Dems that entire time. The city is only about 300,000 with no county. So as a result of crime and poor schools city residents haven’t left Stl Louis they’ve just left the city. For the county and suburbs. I can look out my window and see five massive new developments going up as well.

Chicago is the slowest growing big city in America. Of course it’s a great city. That said I suspect Dems like Lightfoot and the prosecutor and crime play a role in retarding growth. No different than Saint Louis and many other cities run by Dems.

It’s not my city is better than yours so relax. Stl is awful. It’s a political governance question. I could have chosen many other cities to use as an exemplar
Okay, sorry to jump on you for my assumption that you were saying "my city is better than yours." You're right, but Chicago is not some city that's dying like Decatur, IL, or Pine Bluff, AR. To me it's just insane that People are so misinformed on how great a city it is. Apologies.

It's still growing though and Downtown vibrant. No one here likes Lightfoot. She's awful and will lose the next election.

Only 11 of the top 50 cities in the US have a Republican mayors, and they're not really the place anyone would describe as interesting places to live. Jacksonville (rated one of the most boring cities in the US), Fresno (one of my hedge fun managers I worked with was born and raised there. She calls it the "Armpit of America"), Fort Worth (one decent city), Oklahoma City (Yawn), Mesa (shrug), Omaha, Colorado Springs (Religious right loons), Miami (Great City), Tulsa, and Bakersfield. Wow. So out of all the cities run by Republicans, there is one "cool" one.

"Why is such a great city the slowest growing large city in America?": Property Taxes that are TOTALLY out of control, cold winters, and a high crime rate. Cities all across the rust belt are seeing the same problems.

True on all fronts

@BradStevens Looks like Vallas actually has a shot at this thing. This is Lightfoots own internal polling.

May consider shifting my support behind him, if it keeps Chuy out of the runoff.

The concern is that if Vallas and Lightfoot are the two leading vote getters then he'll get painted as the "Republican" in the run-off and all bets are off. She needs to finish out of the top two.

Anyone know the going rate for black-market chicken wings?

A friend of mine sent this to me. I know a lot of lifelong Chicagoans who feel the same way as the author, but I feel like it's exagerrated:

The only way Vallas wins is if Lightfoot is his opponent in the run-off. She is box office poison even among Democrats.

You think she'll get more votes than Vallas in a runoff?
No, I don’t. I think the only way Vallas stands a chance is if Lightfoot is his opponent. She is absolutely radioactive, except to hard-core identitarian Marxists. If Garcia is Vallas’s opponent, Chuy will be able to cull all the minority vote. Vallas wouldn’t get 45%.

I don’t live in the city, but if I did, I think my vote would be for Willie.

Ah gotcha. Misread your post. Lol. I live in the city and know of no one who has or will vote for her. I do a fair bit of driving in this city and Chuy has two diff campaign signs. One is "normal". The other one, only seen on the Northside , is white with green lettering with clover leafs. Doing anything he can to get that Irish vote!

Ha, that’s interesting. I thought the Irish strongholds were in the Mount Greenwood, Merrionette Park, Beverly areas. Shows what I know. Lol.

I worked in DuPage County for a while.

Police can’t respond, but you shouldn’t own a firearm to protect yourself.

IL, Chicago, and Cook (crook) County are still going broke. Lori didn’t make that better.

I agree Chicagoans will vote Lori out, in favor of the best law and order candidate.
I expected better from a former US attorney.

Once upon a time, the Chicago Dem. machine was about law and order.

Bryne was voted out for not getting the streets plowed.
Actually, it was Michael Bilandic who was voted out following the snowstorm in 1979. Jane Byrne followed him in office.

Johnson could potentially be even worse than Lightfoot. Although with my recent troubles, maybe a soft on crime Mayor is what I need right now.

Have a couple calls in to your boy Cheronis, but having trouble getting a hold of him. My situation might be too small potatoes. Shoot me an if you would like me to mention you by name if/when we finally connect or if you have Recs for someone who might be more suited for misdemeanor type nonsense.

I'll email you some names tomorrow.

lol

Goodfellas alive and well in Chicago

It’s the teachers‘ union backing Johnson and the cops backing Vallas.

I think Chicago votes with the cops. But the machine may be with the teachers‘ union.

Polls close soon.
