entering portal Gonna try pro response first. WAC player of the year.Utah Valley 18.9 points 13.6 rebounds 1.7 assists and 1.3 blocks a game. 2nd in country with 27 double-doubles. Not sure if he'd go to IU as he wants to be on competitive team in NCAA tourney but it doesn't hurt to offer- UK,Zags and others have already.

If he wants a competitive team then stay in the mid majors. Better guards.

How do you know this is true?
Three players have to leave to clear up scholarships for the three incoming Freshmen. Can’t get a portal transfer unless another current scholarship play leaves. I have no idea what players might leave.

Truth be known, NOBODY has to leave. Athletes Bill of Rights. They CAN leave if they want to play basketball, or they can be cut and just be a college student on their guaranteed scholarship and finish their degree. It's funny how everybody equated this to something bad, when it's actually a good thing for us this year. It's like Creaning, but Creaning lite

Could IU over sign and non scholarship athletes use NIL program to pay cost/tuition?

Good luck telling a student-athlete they are no longer on scholarship and now need to cover $50k+/yr out of their own pocket. That will go over well.

We have a max of 13 scholarship players. We currently have 13 and three incoming Freshmen. Theoretically, three scholarship players can decide to give them up and be walk-ons, but that's not going to happen. We'll have a max of 13 scholarship players so it's a near certainty that a minimum of three current players will move on. That'll be either by transfer, decide to give the pros a try, or decide they're ready to move on with a post-basketball life.

Did they change the rules and I am just uninformed? What is a "guaranteed scholarship"?
Athletic scholarships were just year to year at the discretion of the coach, right?

Maybe in certain cases, but I think a player cannot be a walkon at a school that has previously offered them a scholarship.
I don't think that's true. I remember several years ago, Louisville had a pretty good player (certainly scholly worthy) who's family was pretty wealthy and he gave up his scholly and I think was considered a walk on or preferred walkon, but paid his own way his last year or 2.

IU instituted the SBOR, so at IU they can still get their tuition paid, but then I think they couldn't be on the team, so it's not likely at IU I would think.

You might be right. I also saw where BYU has an NIL deal to cover tuition for all walkons

that's smart, and probably pretty cheap and gets you to 16 or more "tuition-free" roster spots, right? Is there a limit to the # of walkons?

The university isn't facilitating the NIL payments. That's not allowed.

we're getting a little OT, but there is zero way to outlaw or enforce schools not facilitating NIL payments.

you could outlaw and enforce them not doing it "officially", but you never could them doing it unofficially.

while i would be shocked if some weren't already, it will be done in the future and hard to not see most everyone doing it.

what can be done, will be done. 100% chance. that's just how the world works.

a school just going through a 3rd party will enable them to do anything they want NIL wise, including paying players to sign and to play..

and if the schools themselves don't initiate such 3rd party workarounds, 3rd parties themselves will, as there is money, serious money, to be made there for 3rd parties..

and again, because it can be done and there is no way to stop it, it therefore will be done.

i'm too old and too lazy to pursue this angle, but Cavanagh should be all over it.

To clarify things, if they stay and aren't on the team, their sch still counts against the limit of 13......at least that's my understanding.

My question was if the NIL set up by the university could pay the tuition
I wouldn't see why not, by it's highly unlikely that someone that had an NIL deal would get overrecruited and cut. And they wouldn't need it to pay for tuition. Once you're on scholarship as a player, your scholarship remains even if you're cut. They can choose to just be as student with free tuition or go elsewhere. Food, housing, bills, transportation, yeah if that ever happened and someone with an NIL got cut, why shouldn't they be able to use that money
