Hart, Kelzer and Wilhite Named 2016 Hoosier Baseball Captains

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Head Coach Chris Lemonis and the Hoosier baseball program have announced that senior left-handed pitcher Kyle Hart, redshirt junior right-handed pitcher Jake Kelzer and senior infielder Brian Wilhite have been named team captains for the upcoming 2016 season. Hart, Kelzer and Wilhite were selected by their teammates.

"This shows a lot of respect for these three players and how they go about their business on and off the field," said Lemonis. "These are three upper classmen that have played in a lot of big time atmospheres, and I'm looking forward to having them help lead this team. Even though our players selected these three captains, we still have a lot of leaders in that clubhouse."

Hart led Indiana with a 5-0 record and a 1.21 ERA during the 2015 campaign, as he appeared in 10 games while starting eight. His team-high fifth win came in NCAA Regional opener vs. Radford on May 29, recording season bests of 7.0 innings pitched and six strikeouts while limiting the Highlanders to one unearned run in his first NCAA Tournament appearance. Three of Hart's five wins came in Big Ten play.

Kelzer was Indiana's highest selection in the 2015 MLB First-Year Player Draft, chosen by the Chicago Cubs in the 14th round (413th overall). He led Indiana with 73.0 innings pitched and was second with 11 starts and 57 strikeouts. The Bloomington native threw a career-high eight innings vs. Rutgers on April 11 to go along with six strikeouts while putting up a zero in the run column for the Scarlet Knights in the victory. Kelzer's 2.54 career ERA in Big Ten games currently ranks fifth all-time at Indiana.

Wilhite played in 40 games and started 28 times during the 2015 season, making 20 starts at third, with the other eight coming in the middle infield. The Illinois-native finished strong down the stretch, recording a hit in nine of his final 11 contests, including three two-hit games. Wilhite matched career-highs with two hits, a home run, five total bases and three RBI in the 9-1 win vs. Ohio State on May 5.
