Can IU win a national football championship before pu wins a national championship in baskeball?

Well, let’s see.. best college coach in America and the resources of a B10 school. Purdue is not built to win a natty in basketball with their style of play. IU football plays a brand that can score over 40 a game and plays nasty defense. Yes, that’s a great recipe for winning it all. Perhaps not in Cignetti’s first year, but down the road they’ll be in the thick of things for as long as he is here.

What Cignetti has done this year is one of the most remarkable things I've ever seen in sports, at any level.

Worst to first (as of today) in one year, coaching an historically bad program.

We are not just winning every game, we are crushing the competition. IU hasn't done that since 1945 during the Bo McMillin era.

I'll say it. IU has a shot at a national championship this year.

Michigan sucks. IU can beat them by 35 if they want to.
This 100%. Indiana has to be big favorites in the game. Michigan just got decimated after last year. They have those 2 DTs and that CB and Donavan Edwards at RB, but the rest of their lineup is really substandard.

People are intimidated for no reason. Oregon needed every inch to beat OSU with crazy homefield advantage. Oregon, IMO, is the #3 team in the B1G. OSU would beat them at home or a neutral site. IU will beat OSU at the Shoe and will then beat Oregon in Indianapolis. That will earn IU the #1 seed and first round bye. We would then have the easiest path in the playoffs.

IU wins it this year.

Jesus H Christ. This is comical. Get ready to be introduced to Big Boy football on 11/23 in the SHOE.

I too think the national championship predictions are over the top right now but IU has playing “big boy” football all year and they keep getting better.

OSU will be a big test but don’t expect CCC’s bunch to shake with fear when they get to Columbus. I guarantee you they expect to win.

I would watch that movie.

Indiana will expect to win at osu. Our offense is among the best in the country. Our defense has destroyed teams and is getting better and better. We play just as well on the road as we do at home.

I wouldn't be too cocky. You might end up looking stupid.

IU will beat Michigan this year but come on.

There are like 4 schools at most that have the brand and recruiting ability to win a national title - OSU, UM, USC and Oregon.

IU had had a great year and will be 11-1 but you will get eventually get beaten soundly by a top SEC team.

You may be right. Then again, recruiting is a different animal these days. The inherent advantages some of these programs held are not what they were just a couple years ago.

The SEC hasn’t been all that in the NIL era. Starting to show too. USC? I mean…ok.

Like Georgia? The team that beat Kentucky by one point? The team that struggled against Florida?

Like Texas? The team that has beaten no one?

Like Tennessee? The team that lost to Arkansas and struggled against Florida and Kentucky?

I guarantee you IU believes it can beat anyone in the country.

Believe what you want.

But talent does win out at the end of the day.

USC has a ceiling second to none.

Just because they've hired the wrong coaches doesn't change that. We've seen what the SC ceiling is. National titles.

Cignetti could be your version of Alvarez at Wisconsin or Snyder at K St. We will see. Or maybe this is just his one year. But even those guys had ceilings because they didn't have the recruiting brand to get elite talent.

Elite is subjective now. Look at teams who are getting production over talent. Elite coaching is different than elite talent. USC has an administration problem…Florida too. Every brand is only a brand if they win. Look at Nebraska and IU basketball. In this era you had better get it together.

Georgia has a real QB problem. They aren’t winning it this year. IU can beat anyone and it’s just past conditioning that has people questioning it.

LSU/Bama and Iowa/UCLA this weekend should be a good barometer.

LSU lost to USC by 7, and beat UCLA (in Baton Rouge) by 17. They're probably like Iowa-level good, right?

Might be able to tell how good Bama is, based on what happens in these games...kinda.

speaking of USC, didn’t they whip LSU which is a top SEC team? USC has gotten a tough introduction to the Big Ten and as of right now are middling at best in the conference.

Looks to me like the SEC has been beating up on each other but not showing the rest of the country all that much. I think the SEC is the most overrated conference in the last ten years.

By the way, OSU needed some serious Columbus magic to get past Nebraska….a team IU beat by 49.

Oregon beat OSU by one AT HOME. You need to study more, son.

Alabama lost to Vanderbilt as well. Maybe Vanderbilt is the second coming of the '72 Dolphins now?

This IU team plays angry. They want to curbstomp every opponent. I don’t know how many other teams play like that, which gives IU a big psychological advantage in games. I truly think this team can win a national championship.

What, exactly, was the recruiting brand of Georgia and Clemson 15-20 years ago?

NIL and the portal have created a new landscape. It's way more mercenary, but I think Cignetti is showing how to capitalize on it. Time will tell if he can keep improving our brand, but it's not impossible.

That said, I'd take an Alvarez or Snyder all day, every day for our program.

Cig has basically made an all star team from non P4 schools which, by itself, gives schools like Indiana in football the ability to overcome the traditional schools that stockpile 4*'s and 5*'s and were probably already paying players. I know it is basketball, but I'd take Ron Harper, Bonzi Wells, Wally Szczerbiak, Larry Bird, etc. any day of the week: these are players that would kick anybody's ass. Non P4 schools are kind of like a minor league now.

I don’t think that works with football. You do need too talent to compete. Hopefully, Cig can sell himself and the program to those kids. I’m hopeful.
