Up by three, Matta decides to not foul & Providence hits the three & goes on to win by 10 in OT.
I used to be against the intentional foul, but I think it’s the right strategy now. I’d force the ball handler to use his off hand to kill as much time as possible then foul before anyone can shoot. You risk a long rebound on the second free throw but it’s better than giving up a wide open three in regulation.

I, too, long ago came around on this.

First time I saw it happen was the ‘87 Illini at PU game, which coincides with first year of the 3-point shot. Both teams in top 10. Illini led pretty much the whole way. PU down 3, Lou Do doesn’t foul. Doug Lee sends it to OT. PU wins in OT.

Meanwhile #3 IU would play the channel 4 night cap at #1 ranked Iowa. IU Gave up 101 points that night to lose their first Big 10 game that cold, cold night.
