BIG west coast additions?

If they come, they may find it is a much tougher conference than they think. It will improve the cache of the B1G and make it a coast-to-coast conference. IU & NU will need to up their recruiting and I hope our admin steps up to help football compete. The administration needs to do more with NIL because recruits look at that and decide where they go.

If the Big Ten wasn’t too big for IU already, this is the nail in it’s coffin. This will bury a small sports school like IU.

I disagree, I hope the admin does more to help out by paying the assistant coaches more so good ones don't leave. I hope the admin works had to get alums to pony up dollars for NIL. Increase the off the field staff if needed and do whatever needs to be done to move IU to the top level.

This addition is all football based. IU doesn’t have that backing from donors or admins to keep up. However, we aren’t alone. There are probably 5 other schools in this conference in the same boat. Would love to see a collection of schools like IU, Purdue, Illinois, Missouri, Kansas, Kansas State, Iowa State, Northwrstern, Vanderbilt, Oklahoma State and other Midwest schools to form their own conference and get out of this absurd rat race.

This "rat race" could force the admin to do more and help IU FB into being a top 20 football school.

You have a LOT more faith in Dolson to be anything more than a lackey for men’s basketball. Unless you are committed to football, you have no business staying in the Big Ten. These additions are with the goal to get a football power like ND. They aren’t making overtures to basketball powers like Duke or Kansas. Football is where the money is and if you think you want to compete in that space, you better be all in. No half-assed commitments.

To be fair, there are only going to be about 40 college football teams, so reaching the top 20 seems more attainable.

Also, look at it like this (with hypothetical numbers):

Say OSU currently makes $50 million from TV and $80 million from football for a total of $130 million. Indiana currently makes $50 million from TV and $15 million from football for a total of $65 million. This equals 50% of the football revenue.

However, if those numbers become $100 million and $80 million for a total of $180 million and $100 million and $15 million for a total of $115 million. This equals approximately 64% of the revenue and could bridge some of the gap - and will be a shit ton more than any other non-B1G or non-SEC school. It will make it MUCH more difficult for teams like Pitt, West Virginia, and Arizona State to beat us out for recruits.

With all of this money coming, how long before NFL coaches start moving to college football?

Well then fortunately for you, you won't have to worry about tormenting this board anymore as that will be the end of iu athletics! Adios!

IUFB was in the damn top 10 two freaking years ago (when you were nowhere to be found on this site). We aren't going to be hurting for money anymore, to the tune of $100 mil per year, and I have no idea what your issue with Dolson is. His tenure has been crippled by trying not to cut sports after covid.

College coaches now make more money than NFL coaches. NFL coaches however get pensions and don't have to recruit. Recruiting is why NFL coaches stay in the NFL, and I don't blame them.

I’ll still follow Mayberry U, even when they are no longer in the “new” Big Ten.

What Dolson very well may do -- and he'll be crucified for it -- is take a big chunk of that money and get the entire department back on a strong financial footing, dealing with the recent deficits and getting everything back to pre-Covid levels. Then and only then should he look at investing it into the football program (among others).

Holy sh*t, if Kentucky, Louisville and Cincinnati can figure out
a way to keep their athletic programs relevant there must be
someone at IU with two gray cells to form a plan to compete.
Furthermore, have not heard any PU fans talking about closing
down their locker rooms or letting the air out of the ball and
going home and that is a sure sign that anybody can figure
it out.

Then you weren’t reading when PU lost out on that Kansas State basketball transfer.

Grey cells at IU?
Maybe with a new administration.

I want to look at this from the standpoint of the West Coast schools. Historically, They have claimed that they have been short shifted and overlooked in Media and national rankings because so many of their games are played late on Saturday night when 80% of the population East of the Mississippi River is in bed and not watching. Those days will now be over and they will have to find a new excuse.

The other question in my mind is where do you reach the point where a Conference Football Championship is meaningless. Right now We are struggling with scheduling 9 Conference games in a 12 game schedule. What do You do with a 20 team League ? Four divisions with 5 Teams each and take the division winners at Year end and do a two week playoff to get to a Champion. And what happens like in 2020 when You set one rule for determining Championship Participants and Gene Smith at OSU gets a red ass and tells the Conference that despite the rules his team gives the Big 10 the best chance to make Money in the NCAA Championship.

Better yet what do you do to hold a Conference Championship in track? Bring in 20 teams and do a 3 to 5 day marathon of events to eliminate individuals to get to a Championship? Or do You do what We did in High School and hold geographic regional, district, and sectional meets to reduce the field to get to the State Finals Participants?

A lot of questions to be answered.

Like you, I hope the B1G has a plan for how many teams they want to bring in. Don't bring them in they and scramble for a plan. My guess is they have a pods schedule to deal with whatever the number ends up being.
