Big payout at US Open

Wow, first time I think I've seen a winner's share over 3 million... I thought a major generally had paid just over 2 million). Am I behind, or is that an LIV effect? 1.5 mill for a shared 2nd seems awfully high too. Maybe short term at least, these guys will be thanking the LIV tour!

Yep, thats LIV. It's kind of telling that they immediately bumped up the purse after LIV went online. Like, they obviously had extra millions lying around, but only put it into the purse when a more player friendly league came along.

I'm not sure that "player friendly" is the correct description.

Phil alluded to the absolute massive amount of cash the Tour is sitting on, and was mostly made in the Tiger era where he was the clear #2. I kinda get his beef honestly.

Does LIV give a bunch to local charities? Pay the tournament workers?

PGA Tour makes a big deal about donating to charities, but they also don’t pay most “staff” - local golf clubs “volunteer” to staff scoring, etc. at every PGA Tour event. Free labor.

PGA Tour has vulnerabilities other than player pay/winnings.

But … I doubt if any of them want to be an “employee” of LIV either.

Gonna be interesting to see how it plays out, but my bet is that - so far- the guys who run Augusta are smarter than Norman and Mickelson.

Mickelson supposedly got $200 mill guaranteed to switch as an aging player with declining skills in the twilight of his PGA career. Sounds pretty f'n smart to me!

Bidenflation is so bad even Phil needs more $$$

Phil, DJ, Charls, or Sergio wouldn’t join w/o talking to Augusta leadership. DJ even alluded to that in an interview. I also think they’ll get world golf rankings points very soon. Good grief, the Hero has them and it’s a 16 man hit and giggle. The world views the Saudi’s in a completely different light. Worse comes to worse they’ll join the DP Tour.

But how long can/will they pay anybody else that kind of money?

Pretty soon, they gotta have more than old already-done guys.

Not to mention human rights and oil. I’m sure the Vagina Hats are planning protests.

When they played at Crooked Stick I looked into being a volunteer. You actually had to pony up some cash to "volunteer". I don't remember the details and it wasn't much, but it did require some out of pocket expenses.

Yep. I paid to work the PGA and Ryder Cup at Valhalla.

It was a neat experience, but I won’t do it again.

I’m gonna buy season tickets for the LPGA and flirt with weird lonely girl golfers.

PGA Tour is expected to make 1.5 billion dollars this year alone. And they’re sitting on cash reserves they won’t disclose.

That’s all?
That’s pocket change for the poorest member of the House of Saud.
They give babies (males) that much for allowance.

I would prefer to not have the LIV and I think it will fail, but to me there's a difference between Phil and everyone else, unless they're all getting mad signing bonuses, but I haven't heard that with anyone else. I think Rory's argument about players sticking together, etc... is the right one, but I'm also not going to blame anyone who pockets 200 mill like that.

surely Phil realizes it isn't personal, right.

I don't think the PGA Tour has anything to do with the US Open.
The USGA runs the US Open. That's why the LIV guys were able to play... and overwhelmingly miss the cut.
Accurate, although the purse boost for the US Open was also related to LIV. The USGA and PGA tour were both happy to keep purses lower when no one could do anything about it.

Back in high school in the mid 80's I got suckered into working as a volunteer in concessions for a women's tournament at Crooked Stick (some partnership with my school to fund something). The memory is fuzzy but I do recall it was sweltering, miserable, very busy and I accidentally dropped a respectful "yes sir" on what turned out to be a gal with more facial hair than 17 year old me.

Good times...

Dustin Johnson's signing bonus was 120 million. Even Kevin Na got some kind of bonus.

There's also the purses. Charl Swartzel made more for winning the first LIV event than he made in his career on the PGA tour.

Plus, there is no getting cut at LIV. Some people don't realize it, but you can actually lose money playing on the tour, and even more so on the Korn Ferry Tour. Players who miss the cut didn't just miss a paycheck. They went in the hole paying for travel, lodging, and the rest. Miss 4 cuts in a row, and you basically went on 4 vacations and made no money that month. That kind of lifestyle isn't sustainable for most people, especially kids just out of college.

I'm not going to call it exploitative, but can you imagine if IU said their scholarships were contingent on the team finishing over 500? Like if IU went 14-15 and IU sent them a tuition bill after the season.

Schwartzel didn’t make more in 1 LIV win.
He’s a very accomplished player.
Speaking of Brooks Koepka…he’s either trolling everyone hard or joining LIV. He broke off his Srixon deal and scrubbed his Twitter bio of any affiliation of the PGA Tour. His brother already signed with LIV

PGA (last week): We dont have the resources to dole out any more money guys! Zero left in the kitty! ZERO.

LIV Tour (yesterday): Hello! Mister. Welcome to Saudi Arabia!!!
We will give you another $50million Mister Mickelson if you are willing to change your name to Mr Mohammed bin Abdullah Mickleson.

Phil: Where do I sign?

PGA (Today): We are glad to announce an increase in the prize winnings across the board, my fellow golfers!!

Twitter is fun today! New hot rumor to sign this week. Colin Morikowa.
Hope not. That would be a loss for the tour of one of their rising young guns!

The marketing opps with Koepka and DeChambeau being together again makes since and Matsuyama is an established worldwide star with a huge Japanese following. Of course the way they are throwing money around, I'm not sure there is a great amount of strategy involved.

Greg, I just want to say I still have some fuel in the tank if you want to employ my services!

Koepka is official.

Ancer is joining this week and Matsuyama is rumored. The Tour is in massive trouble.
I'm curious if the hard line stance the PGA took when they booted guys out has actually changed the thinking of some guys who might have been on the fence? Throw in the purse increases and maybe they're wondering if the tour has and will continue to lie about the money that can be paid out.

Hovland and Xander are apparently close…but not quite there. Morikawa might not be today, but has scrubbed PGA Tour from his socials bio.

If they can get world golf rankings points and there are 48 guys per event with no cut it’s an automatic top 75 in the world and into almost every major. I’m sure guys are counting to 48 and know the ship is about full.

The Tour had an emergency players meeting this morning at the Travelers.

Morikowa isn’t jumping. Team probably leaked info to gauge reaction. Rumors of the PGA Tour now starting a 3 tourney Fall Series for top players for huge cash and no cuts. (Uh, I’m sure Fed Ex will love that) That would honestly piss me off more to join LIV.
