Beilein

Ok,I wasn’t sure of the timing.
I just remember something about him being mentioned at one time.

No worries, you just got confused on which coach we replaced. IIRC, it was Sampson instead of Crean that we chose over Beilein and the rumors posted above are how I remember it as well. That is the gift that keeps on giving...ugh.

Herbert insisted on a minority hire. Beilein was who Greenspan was going to hire until he was overruled.
I do remember Herbert

Yes,I knew when I said Crean that didn’t sound right. Yes,that makes more sense.
Thanks.

There’s that money thing again for all those claiming IU will pay big $ for a coach. You know who you are.

You do realize it took him 4 years to get going at Michigan. Would our fan base have tolerated that, when now they were calling for Archie’s head after just a year and a half?

BTW, Beilein might be the best tourney coach in the country. Wouldn’t be surprised at all to see Michigan once again in the Final Four.

He was one of the few B1G teams Crean could usually beat in his first few years. He wasn't above .500 in conf until his 5th year.

Well, I would say that with Crean and Archie being in the top ten in the country in pay would be equivalent to "big $".

Beilein would have inherited much more at IU.

DJ White. Rod Wilmont. Armon Bassett. Earl Calloway. Lance Stemler. AJ Ratliff. Joey Shaw.
Gee, some of which Clappy kicked of to go recruit shitty players that like to drink and drive. He created his rebuild and he got it. For his stupidity, he got rightfully fired

I think they will win it. Beilein is a machine.

When Crean took over:
DJ White was graduating
Stemler was graduating
Wilmont had graduated the previous year
Basset had been kicked off by Dakich
Ratliff was gone mid season before Sampson was fired
Calloway and Shaw had been gone for 2 years.

Not one of those guys he listed was kicked off by Crean.

2002 run and Greenspan were the two worst things to ever happen to IU basketball. I can't say Knight being fired, as we would have had to deal with his senile years, and his son taking over for him. If Davis could have been forced out a little earlier and a better hire had been made to replace him.....but what ifs....

Big $ for a proven, as in Donovan, Stevens, etc that has been suggested on here.

Archie is 13th.

Ok, so Archie is 13th. Really doesn't change my point.
How do you KNOW that IU/Glass will not pay the big $ or is that just speculation on your part?
Maybe he reached out to both of those and was told no thanks or maybe they wanted outrageous money. If they wanted 60mil for 4 years, I would have said thank you for listening.

I read many times that Glass nickels and dimes the football program yet a LOT of money has been spent on facilities and he just hired an OC that is among the highest paid in the conference.

Sure, he is not going to wreck the budget to hire a particular coach and I am good with that approach but I have not seen the hard evidence that he is not willing to spend the money to make teams successful. Football was LONG neglected by IU, it appears to me Glass is trying to catch up and I appreciate that he is.

Yeah, that 2002 run was awful - stupid. Beating Duke was IU's most memorable win until the Wat Shot.

Hiring a head coach without a national search was not playing "catch up." Facilities upgrades are great, but amount to nothing without the right coach. Allen doing no better than his predecessors so far.

At the foundation that is not true. What he has done his first 2 full recruiting classes has not been done here for a very long time if ever. At some point that has to translate to W's, right now it buys you more rope if nothing else.

And I believe it is not unreasonable to think that TA is the right coach especially giving the last two recruiting classes. That has to translate to the field and the win/loss column but I think that could happen.

I also think that FG saw first hand what kind of coach and person TA was and is. I have no reason not to believe that he made a couple of calls to football people he knew to get feedback on TA and then decided to hire the guy in his back yard.

As I have posted before, TA in his first two years when compared to other IU coaches first two years, has the second highest winning percentage since WWII. Obviously that is no predictor of the future.

If TA is successful at IU, an added bonus is I don't believe he would be one to jump at the first higher profile job offer.

IU isn’t going to pay what it takes to get a big time coach. They do not want a coach larger than the university. Another example, see the football hire experiment.

That's a big consideration, IMO. Most rising star coaches who would make a name for themselves at IU would not hesitate to jump at an opportunity to go to a more "name" football school. From what I can gather, TA wants this to be his last stop.

Don’t ruin some people’s hatred of Crean with the truth
