Bates.....

I like T Bates. Like his potential. But I am not sure if he is the answer to Kopf and Stewart this year. On the defensive end he seems to get beat alot. Guys will go right around him or he won't come out against the 3. It will be nice if one of the 3 really contributes against St. Mary's.

i'll admit i haven't paid that much attention to his D, so i'll try and watch that more closely.

i used to hear people btch about Leal's defense, which i thought was pretty good.

that said, everybody is waiting for Kopp or Stewart to break out, which i absolutely hope they do, but i think Bates is the one on the verge of breaking out offensively, other than JG, who already is breaking out, and should continue.

well, I've accepted that we're not going to be a very proficient 3 pt shooting team, so the greatest thing Bates brings offensively to me over Kopp and Stewart is the ability to drive and score. Kopp has shown flashes, but has just not been consistent enough offensively to matter unfortunately. So, if Bates isn't any worse at 3s and can get around his man, he's at least adding something. I also haven't watched his D specifically, so that may be the problem to PT.

Bates shoots it from 3 as well or better than Kopp or Stewart, plus he can drive and has a nice pull up mid game which he can get his own shot on.

even on the shots he's missed recently he's looked good on, and got hammed on a drive late against Wy that went uncalled, which JG finished off, and should have been shooting 2 free throws there. (not that JG's put back slam didn't work out better).

Bates still get's lost more times than you'd like to see. Usually on the second screen, there's a good chance he's in no man's land. It's gotten better, but it still happens.

Geronimo was in the same boat earlier, but has improved by leaps and bounds relative to Bates.

This is only true in your head. Bates shoots less than 30% from 3. That’s atrocious. Stewart shoots 40% and Kopp 36%. And they’re shooting many more contested shots. If Bates was better he’d be playing their minutes. Classic backup QB mentality.

It is. He’s not better at 2 of the 3 things Kopp does. He’s still not a finisher either. Bates isn’t better at shooting or defensively yet.
