Bart Torvik's 2023 projections have IU #14 without X or Kopp on the roster

Interestingly, you can add a player back in yourself using his Roster Cast function. I added X back in and IU jumped 1 spot to #13. However, when I add Kopp, IU falls to #19. No love for Miller in the Torvik projection model.:)
Ouch for Kopp! Unless we get a top portal guy I'd like him on the roster. Let's bring stabilizers off the bench next year rather than start them.

Kopp being on the roster doesn't mean he will play the same role. Geronimo playing more and Kopp playing less would be an improvement next year. I feel good with the progress JG made this year. I don't expect Oladipo or OG improvement next year, but he reminds me of those two.

I have been thinking about who are top 5 players and players will be. I want it to be x, Race, Trayce, and Geronimo but I can't decide on the shooting guard. I would choose Galloway if he improves shooting . I would choose Bates if his D and overall understanding of the game improves.

Geronimo isn’t playing for Kopp. Kopp and Galloway at the 3. JG is a stretch 4 at this point. Bates at the 3 too. JG won’t be in with race.

Assuming that the coaches don’t have Kopp penciled in at the 3, which they very well may have……

………..,and that any mention of how Geronimo is being used isn’t a moot point.

Yeah, at the 3. He'll be a big factor in that lineup....as the 3.
No he won’t. Lol. Who’s going to be races back up or start over race? Banks is more a 3 than JG is and Kopp will be playing. Where do you put Bates and Galloway? Plus you aren’t factoring in who comes in from the portal. Unless JG gets a lot better horizontally without better handles he’s not a 3.

He told me that X and Kopp are not rostered at this point because it happens automatically once a player uses up eligibility. At some point the Super Seniors will be added back in, but I thought it was pretty cool that his system has IU in the Top 15 even without X.

Why should I trust someone named Bart? Kidding. Who is he?

I have to say I like X, Bates, Gallo, Geronimo and TJD, bring Race off bench

haha You used NW game as an example. Where he had 3 blocks in only 17 minutes of action. You're talking out of your rump.

No I’m not. He got benched. 3 blocks or not. You guys crack me up. You still haven’t answered why or how he will start at the 4 let alone the 3.

wasn't that the game where JG got burned on an out-of-bounds play under the NW basket and looked totally lost, leading to an easy 1-on-zero layup...and was on the bench 10 seconds later?

He is sort of like KenPom, but all the bells and whistles are still free on Torvik's site. I would say that his site is probably in the Top 5 metrics sites that basketball fans use.

You've got Kenpom, Sagarin (ratings only), Bart Torvik, Teamrankings, Haslemetrics etc.

Those are the ones I use, along with sports-reference, the most, but I'm sure there are other good sites that I'm unaware of.

I think Torvik does a good job of factoring in incoming recruits. @T.M.P. probably has more good resources if your interested in this kind of stuff.

Bring your 5th year 12 and 8 guy who’s a good defender and can actually hit a 3 off the bench? Disagree

It’s going to be hard to have a team defense scheme with Bates and Geronimo on the floor together until they improve. Both are lost 50% of the time on D. Geronimo makes a great block and everyone thinks he can play D. Plus anytime he dunks it’s a guarantee he’s fouling the immediate play after on D. Like clockwork.

agreed. Race isn't coming back to ride the bench. Assuming he does return (and all signs now point that way) it's for 30+ min/game.

JG really isn't a stretch 4, he's traditional (albeit undersized) pure PF. I actually think that Race is closer to being a stretch 4 than JG.

They both aren’t but that’s what they are asked to do. Im not arguing that he never could become a 3. He’s just not there yet. A true stretch 4 technically can play and guard 3 spots. Race isn’t great on close outs. JG is better at that.

Its crazy to me how impactful these metrics think Broome would be.

Adding him boosts us more than bringing Xavier back does.

And bringing Xavier back, AND adding Broome, jumps us all the way up to 5th?!

I can't imagine he'd have that big of an impact if both Race and TJD came back. So there definitely are some holes in this metric system in terms of how certain types of players would impact a team.

Add hoopsmath for splits ..

Could Race take the Trevion Williams route and be TJDs back up? That allows Geronimo to start with TJD, but also stay on the court with Race. Basically Jordan and Race and TJD using 80 minutes, surrounded by some combo of guards.

I mean technically he could.

And, Thompson and Jackson-Davis play very well together at the same time.

Assuming all three are back, there is good chemistry between/among Jackson-Davis, Thompson and Johnson. I'd hate to mess it up by benching Thompson based on statistics.

How many times last season did we see Johnson drive down the right edge of the lane and throw up a crazy-looking shot, no wait! It's really a lob to Jackson-Davis for a jam or a pass to Thompson who had sneaked down the baseline behind the defense.

And how many times last season did we see Jackson-Davis get surrounded in the paint only to hand a wraparound pass to Thompson 3-4 feet away on the opposite side of the lane?

Those three play well together. There certainly will be a replacement for Stewart but I don't want to tinker with playing those three together.

Kopp, by the way, is a good defender, our best FT shooter by far (86.5 %) and 6-7, too. I don't see where we have another player on the roster with that height and skillset. Bench him at your risk.

The one thing that I’ve noticed with our bigs is how slow they are moving to get open. Agree about Kopp. He gets a bad rep from our coaching gurus. Lol.

That's 4 starters from an underperforming offense. I agree it occasionally worked well, but overall it's not good enough. Either Race or TJD needs to play and score from outside 5 feet from the basket. I think they understand that, we'll see if they can make it happen.

dont think Kopp being here or not has any effect at all on IUs outlook for next season....hes benchwarmer material only to me. And I think the former asst. saw that as well.

We all know we had no reliable outside shooting last year. So, what other type of offense is left?

I think we should assume it was a coaching decision to run an offense with Thompson and Jackson-Davis packed near the basket (or maneuvering toward that location). I am doubtful, given the NCAA limitations on practice time, that Thompson and Jackson-Davis can learn to shoot in just a few months.

Yeah, at the 3. He'll be a big factor in that lineup....as the 3.
The one thing I would like to see more from him is an explosive first step and drive to the basket. Nobody did it better than Calbert. Might be good for current players to watch clips of players from the past.

I would love for JG to have the skills to play the 3, unfortunately he showed no sign of those skills last year!
Kopp played the 3 and he's certainly not much more advanced in perimeter skills.

All Jordan needs to do is become effective with two dribbles to create space and drive and also more importantly not make mistakes and he'll be fine at 3.

And defend on the perimeter & shoot the 3 better & shoot free throws better
