Bad News: Just Lost a DT

My bet is that in the wake of the medical “mistreatment” allegations these days, not just at IU but other schools, this kid felt he should have played last year while still “on hold” medically with the team medical staff.

Purely a guess but I think cautious trainers and doctors were not what Juan had in mind last year or agreed with.

I hope a positive can come out of this for both parties. Harris could fit another system better and become healthier in different conditions. IU now has another scholarship spot to play with. I’d like to think it is going to be well utilized and could bring in another DT for roster management. Wish him the best.

Hate to speculate what it was, but him mentioning directly "because of the medical staff", can't be great for that said medical staff. (Meaning, they are thrown under the bus by him, and not able to probably respond due to confidentiality concerns.)

Not sure anyone thought this kid was going to stay very long. The medical staff issues are concerning given the documented problems of the recent past.

Not sure anyone thought he was going to stay very long because the kid couldn't make up his mind where he wanted to play in the first place.

They probably wouldn't clear him to practice and he's not happy about.

His recruitment raised some red flags about his approach
Are you referring to Dane Kemp, huge DT from Lansing area? I always wondered what happened with him.

Yep. Asked Mallory personally about him and all he said was something like: he's no longer with us.

Heard he dominated everyone he lined up against in practice... Think he ended up at one of the MI directionals, not sure which one...

He ended up at IU because he was going to be on the field more and sooner. A now cautious medical staff wasn't going to be a good fit for his expectations. Hope he finds happiness and does well.

Dane Kemp, wow!! Hadn't heard that name in close to 30 years.

Wouldn't doubt if Harris ends up at NIU or some other MAC-type school. Maybe even Juco. Doubtful any P5 will waste time and effort on him.

Steve Williams comes to mind too.

If the medical staff was overly cautious in holding him out, this move makes sense. It’s not a problem until it’s a problem. If the staff does this with too many guys, it will begin to hurt the team. You have to weigh the cost of sitting a guy out with the benefit of playing him. Harris leaving is one guy who is replaceable due to the number of d-lineman we have. The extra scholarship is a marginal benefit imho to add depth on the o-line next year.

However, how long guys are held out could have consequences if the medical staffs logic in the Harris situation spreads to other situations. The issue with Wilson wasn’t so much that he rushed guys back, as much as his attitude toward those guys. That’s what brought him down. The medical staff needs to understand the nuance and not be overly cautious in the future. You can not treat a guy badly, and still try to get him back on the field with a less cautious approach. Both of those things can coexist within reason. Clearly if they were extreme in rushing guys back we’d have an issue. Pure speculation, but they may have been overly cautious with harris, which again isn’t big deal in this particular situation.

firm believer in always siding on the side of caution.

too many athletes, both high level and local park, try to come back too soon, even though they think it's not too soon.

trying to come back too soon can and does sometimes ruin careers, or diminish them.

so much better to stay out a little extra if possible, and be sure you're totally healed so you don't re injure yourself and screw yourself up more than your original mishap.

no idea why this gentleman is leaving, but hope he's totally healed from whatever injury he had, and can go full boar with confidence where ever he goes.

I've always had concern over players that huge. It has been noted before that if college football ever went back to one platoon and players had to go both ways, that players couldn't be anywhere that heavy and still be productive.

Depending on what the injury was/is, I wouldn’t be surprised if the medical staff was recommending weight reduction to facilitate the healing/reduce risk of reoccurrence.

Maybe he felt that the med staff should have done something for him while maintaining his size

The coaching staff, including both S & C regimes, have been insisting on weight reduction simce he signed his LOI. Having the medical staff do that would be nothing new.

He’s transferring to Iowa Western.

You can’t have your Big Macs and eat ‘em too!

I’m sure weight reduction, a healthy playing weight, was something they felt was necessary to get him on the field. Kid needed to comply.

No idea if that was the issue, but he played at 350+ last year before he got hurt, so who knows?

The timing makes me think it is the new S&C program. There will be some separating of the wheat and the chaff. Good luck to him.
