Are preseason mags any good for these small conferences?

I think they are valuable in the sense that you can get a breakdown of the teams in a quick and easily accesible format. Beyond that though you need to apply your own judgement and criteria, and having multiple choices helps. Like in your example you have two VERY different predictions. From that I'd look at how each respective magazine picked in the major conferences you have a better handle on and see which one is more in line with your predictions.
