I’m down here with my daughter for a softball tournament through Saturday. Looks like a dump so far but willing to give the town a chance.

Last weekend we were in Santa Claus for another tourney and visited Lincoln’s Boyhood home park which was closed inside.

It is a dump-I grew up there and couldn't wait to leave. No interest in returning either. Worst/ugliest riverfront for a town it's size I've ever seen.

But since you are there for a few days, UE does have a nice small campus-plenty of trees for a nice walk on a hot day. If you want to stay indoors, Eastland Mall is decent. Moore Guitars is a great music store if you are into that. USS-LST 335 is docked downtown if you are into history.

Good luck and enjoy your stay.

Agree w/Geddy - check out the LST if you have time. They just moved it last month to a higher profile location downtown by the casino on the riverfront - haven't been since the move but if you're into history the ship is well worth the time. The zoo is good for a city our size, but it's nothing compared to those found in large metro areas. I like living here but there's really not much to point to as far as tourism goes, and with the Covid crap going on some of the restaurants aren't open now other than carry out and drive thru. I can't imagine sitting in the heat this weekend watching kids' sports - ugh.

What? Did they get rid of the world's largest ball of twine? Damn liberals.

I shouldn't be so negative because it really is a good place to raise a family-at least when I grew up .Decent cost of living, fairly safe and some real nice neighborhoods. Evansville just has very little to offer in terms of entertainment, tourism, dining, etc... Most folks I grew up with would take a road trip to Indy, St. Louis, Louisville, or Nashville when they wanted some fun.

We've lived in Orlando and Raleigh prior to returning to Evansville. The lack of traffic and slower pace is a welcome trade off for me for the relative lack of major entertainment opportunities, and there has been a lot of good locally owned restaurants that have popped up in the last decade or so. What we realized is that when you get down to it, most of us only take advantage of the things available exclusively in larger cities a relative handful of times in a year, and we have St. Louis, Nashville, Louisville or Indy within a 2 1/2 drive for that. Plus the location is great for a sales person - centrally located between four metro areas.

Sorry to hear about the Lincoln Boyhood Home being closed. Lincoln State Park and that National Park thingy were my childhood hangouts.

Cross the river into Henderson, Kentucky. Ellis Park might be open for simulcast horse racing at a degenerate-gambler horse joint (it ain't no Churchill Downs).

Audubon State Park might be a nice quiet outdoor place.

Angel Mounds is a place geeks like - history of mound builder cultures.

New Harmony, Indiana is failed commie settlement.

Posey County likes their melons.

Newburgh - "Best Town By A Dam Site" - used to have The Country Store - where we bought all our cool posters, until the "head shops" opened up.

Owensboro, Kentucky - BBQ Capital of the World. Mutton. Pork. Burgoo. Bluegrass Museum.

Covid probably makes all that stuff suck.

Watch the golf.
Stay safe.

The pizza at Turoni's is quite good. Two locations - one in the "downtown" such as it is, and one probably not far from the hotel you are staying at. I love their thin crust; beer they make on premises is only ok, but that's, well, by definition, ok.

Wanted to order from there but couldn’t find any of the delivery companies who delivered. Instead ordered from Little Italy. It was actually pretty darn good.

Best I can tell, this is the most popular attraction in Evansville

How long have you been away? The mall hasn't been a place of interest for 15 years. Downtown and the riverfront has been revitalized and Haney;s Corner now has shops and a few good restaurants.

In my day, Haneys Corner was not a safe place after dark.

OK, let's not drag skeeball into the discussion here and disparage the only arcade game outside of the bball shot thing, or football toss if you can ever find it, that I can play.
Don’t get me started on the amount of tickets you have to win for some shitty little prize. Honestly there should be a Justice Department investigation into these price gouging practices.

I used to like going to county fairs and the Indiana State Fair. I spent way more on food than I ever did on the midway. Good eats, greasy but good.

Papa Hooky's advice to me the first time I was turned loose at the fair. "If you're going to blow your money, blow it on food, not rigged games".

Hmmm, reminds me of the infamous George Best quote(s) (included a couple others, just because they are so good!):

I spent a lot of money on booze, birds and fast cars. The rest I just squandered.

I used to go missing a lot... Miss Canada, Miss United Kingdom, Miss World.

I've stopped drinking, but only while I'm asleep.

"In 1969 I gave up women and alcohol - it was the worst 20 minutes of my life."

-George Best, Deceased British Soccer Star

Those Carnie's creep me out. Any such thing as a hot looking Carnie? Yea I didn't think so.
