as a Scottie Pippen. He reminds me of him in body-type and play. Troy doesn't have the outside shot yet but I would argue he is more athletic around and just a good a finisher as Pippen. I hope he stays.

Athleticism wise....

Yes. But Pippen was one of the best defenders the game has ever seen. He could guard the 1-4 positions. Troy has a looooong way to go to get to that.

Scottie Pippen.....

wasn't the Scottie Pippen, we came to know, for a few years after going to the NBA. To put that on Troy at this point is an injustice to him and Scottie.

I see it for sure

it is a fantastic comparison, and that is Troys Ceiling. If he puts the work in, no reason he can not achieve multiple All Star appearances and be a fantastic NBA player. He has the perfect body, and like you said he is more athletic. One of, if not the best finisher, IU has ever seen. Find me a dunk like his reverse slam that has ever been done at IU. That move was insanity, and he is a few of those insanity moments in every game. Troy is special.

I don't really see man similarities.....

Pippen was a heckova ball handler, defender and passer from the start.

They are similarly sized and athletic.

You are going off of the pro Pippen

and we never saw what he was like in college because we need to compare what a Williams is as a sophomore in college to what Pippen was in college and not the pros.

Gotcha...

so they are both 20, over 6'5, and african american. In that regard they identical.

He reminds me of college Grant Hill...

Although when I looked it up, it turns out that Hill was probably a little better than Troy as a freshman, but Troy is having a better sophomore year. And Hill is a better passer, although his assist totals are probably boosted by playing on a better team.

More of Shawn Marion right now.

The potential is definitely there, but to make the leap from where he is now to becoming one of the Top 50 players of all time is quite a leap. Troy doesn't have the end to end speed of Scottie Pippen, but I think his athleticism is equal. Of course he hasn't developed the shot or handles yet either. Scottie was also a ball-hawking defender that I'm not sure if Troy will ever be.

But as a sophomore in college, the sky is the limit for this kid. Love watching him play. What a motor...

Hillman was stronger and tallergic than Yogi

My favorite Hillman moment was in his celebration of the National Title.

Troy can't shoot, unless he wants to be in NBDL he needs to stay at IU

And develop his skills to be an NBA player that will stick in the League.

Grant Hill could shoot in college, Troy drives, hooks, dunks

There are a lot of NBDL players that are athletic and can do that, and still can't make permanent spot on a NBA roster.

He wasn't much of an outside threat until later in college

but he did have a nice mid-range game all 4 years. The reason I said "not even close" is because Hill could play MUCH better D than Troy at this point.

Oh, I totally agree.

I was just trying to compare him to Pippen. Pippen went to Central Arkansas and was probably on nobody's radar as a soph. So I'm assuming he probably had the athleticism but maybe had the same shooting deficiencies that Troy has. Troy has to improve his shooting, no question. I think he has to work on his handles and his defense as well. No way is he ready for the NBA. But the potential is there. I could see him going after his Junior year if he has made the improvements. If he leaves after this year he is making a mistake in my opinion.

But I do think Troy is "making the leap"

He is making much better decisions with the ball and is becoming much more active in cutting without the ball, rebounding, etc. His ball handling in traffic, while still a work in progress, is much improved as well. But the bottom line is Troy is becoming a consistent playmaker who is difficult for most other teams to guard.

We don't need him to shoot any 3 pointers and hopefully over the summer he can work hard on his mid-range shooting going into next season. He would be best served staying 4 years and trying to further develop his shot & ball handling.

He most certainly has NBA potential because of his athleticism but needs to beef up and improve ball handling & mid-range shooting. I think he can be a high 1st round pick without being a good 3 point shooter.

Re: Grant Hill could shoot in college, Troy drives, hooks, dunks

Grant Hill went 5-17 from three in his first three years at Duke. His sophomore year he went 0-1. Troy Williams is 7 for 33. Neither one of them are/were good shooters at this point in their career.

But their sophomore year FG% are: HIll: .611 and Williams: .585. And Williams has the rest of the season to improve.

Williams actually averages more steals per 40 minutes this year than Hill did his sophomore year. He averages a few less blocks per 40 minutes--and less assists on a worse team.

I'm not saying he's going to have an NBA career, just that he reminds of HIll, who as a sophomore was basically an athletic swingman with no range.

Maybe?

If you get drafted and play in the NBDL you are getting paid 500k per year. Ricky Ledo was a 2nd round pick by Dallas and made 500k last year and is making 800k this year to develop his skills there as opposed to college. I can see Troy getting drafted and doing this if money is more important to him and his family. If college is important to him then he should stay at IU.

I agree he is a solid 3-4 years away from being anything useful to an NBa team unless he is on a team the caliber of the 76ers but to make a million dollars over 2 years to play in the NBDL will pay for a lot of college. Plus if he succeeds, he gets that rookie contract out of the way so he can get big bucks.

Ball Handling

I saw one of the post game interviews that someone asked what the biggest difference was in his second year. Troy mentioned his hand injury that prevented him from working with ball handling an limited his effectiveness as he continued to heal after returning to the team.

We forget that kids coming out of high school need to spend time improving their game before the first game. Troy is much better with the ball. He still has improvement to make, but he is allowing himself to slow down and make better plays. That helps him from going faster than his ball skills will allow.

He needs to build his mid range shot and the 3 point shot will come after that. I know the NBA drafts on potential, but you want to see a player already come in able to shoot the ball and use a technique that will allow them to improve. Troy will put it all together next year.

If he can get.......

guaranteed first-round money that he's satisfied with, he will be making no bigger mistake than did Vonleh, who has received little playing time on a last place club,...not good.

The problem is seeing a couple million dollars out there and a lot of kids think they're worth it and there's only more to come. It may not happen for Vonleh, who hasn't shown an ability to shoot or rebound at the next level, but who's to say they're making the wrong decisions.

If they stay in school and don't improve their weaknesses, then it's more than likely the NBA won't look at them as young projects with lots of potential. It may be smart to get the money when it's available,.... who knows? If they do earn their 3rd and 4th year options, then everything points to a brighter future, and having made the right decision. The worst scenario is a few million in the pocket, and an opportunity to play at levels below the NBA, and for some, not a bad hand to be dealt.

In leaving school early, they certainly don't leave any money on that table.

Or

he could be a smaller version of this guy.

http://insider.espn.go.com/nbadraft/results/player/_/id/19268/al-farouq-aminu

Yes, he is rising up the draft board predictions and ESPN now has him at 42 and a sleeper to watch. Still, more often than not the league adds players with big time athletic ability but they wind up just being another NBA player like Aminu. My guess is he is gone after this year unless he faceplants or gets hurt.

You do know NV dealt with a sports hernia before the season started.

Char said it hampered his development this year but they are still happy with him. They were not expecting much out of NV with Jefferson and expecting Cody to emerge this year (which he has).

Noah did not make a mistake going in the draft last year.

A poor man's young George Gervin

nowhere near as good as Gervin, but similar finishing styles and just as fearless

Not at all! Scottie ran the point a lot in the NBA and every tim Troy puts the ball on the floor I cover my eyes! Unless Troy REALLY improves his handle that will not be a comparison anyone can legitimately make in my opinion. Heck Scottie was one of the original point forwards, and that is not a role I could EVER see TW in

Pick a B1G game from last year,

watch it, and then watch last nights game again. You will see the unreal change in what Troy does when he puts the ball on the ground. If he continues on this trajectory he will be better than Pippen! I kid I kid, but he is improving at a startling pace. If he returns, and improves like this again, he will be threatening for the #1 pick.

Charlotte.....

is taking heat from fans for drafting a project and then dwelling near the bottom of their division after making the playoffs last year. There's no GM who is going to say they're disappointed with their draft choice, without admitting they made a mistake.

They're also getting heat on the signing of Lance and the resultant effects it's had on what was initially high expectations.

I would agree Noah did not make a mistake going in the draft early, however many feel as though Charlotte did.

Charlotte is taking heat for bringing in Lance.

That signing has been a big big miss for them. Lance and Kemba dont play well together.

Hill was a very different player than Troy

Even though Duke had Hurley, Grant Hill was still kind of a "point forward" kind of player. He was a good ball handler and passer (especially for a player his size) and was adept at initiating the offense. He was also rarely out of control.

He was also a very good mid-range shooter.
