I've never been to Vegas, strangely enough.

I will be there for two weeks in mid-January, testifying as a witness in Federal Court. A law firm put me up at the Golden Nugget since it is close to the courthouse. I am there for two weeks, since I don't know when I will be called. My stay is likely one day of trial prep, part of one day on the witness stand, and the rest of the time waiting to find out when those two things are going to happen. A lot of remote office work is likely in the cards, but still there will be plenty of time to fill.

Gambling doesn't really interest me that much, to be honest. Other than to lay a few bucks on the Patriots.

Recommended shows?
Recommended places to watch the three IU games that are played while I am there?
Would you recommend the bus day trips to the Grand Canyon or Hoover Dam?
Anyone stay at the Golden Nugget before?

As far as shows Beatles Love was really good. Have been to the Hoover Dam it is neat to see and walk on the new bridge that goes over it. The LINQ big wheel is cool especially if you are a little tipsy.

Hoover Dam you can do in a half day. Well worth the trip. Grand Canyon is a liittle too far for a day trip unless you shell out the cash for a Mavrick helicopter tour or just go over the weekend.

Death Valley and Zion are both interesting and pretty close.

IIRC it's about 2.5 hrs for Zion and a little more for DV. Don't know if there are buses or if you would need to rent a car (which is what we did). We've been to both multiple times during Vegas trips.

Someone posted below that Hoover Dam can be done in half a day, which is true, but I think you can find longer tours if you aren't pressed for time. Well worth the trip. The poster also said the Grand Canyon can't really be done in a day without flying, which I agree with 100%.

Bottom line, though, is that two weeks in Vegas is a LOT of Vegas, even with some work sprinkled in.

Other stuff we've done to kill time...... Red Rock Canyon (about a half hour away), Gold and Silver Pawn, top of the Stratosphere and/or Paris Eiffel Tower, Fremont Street, Madame Tussaud's at the Venitian, tons of other stuff. You don't have to spend the entire time in casinos/bars, although there a more than plenty of both. I'll let others mention the clubs and titty bars. I grew up a long time ago and don't have that much energy. vbg

Two years ago I did the helicopter tour of the damn and grand canyon. We actually landed in the canyon and had time to explore some. From the time I as picked up at the hotel to the time I returned, it was about 4 hours. Didn't want to waste my entire day on a bus.

Did the first trip of the morning, so it was cool to catch sunrise over the canyon.

I'd like to do the Area 51 tour...I don't think they actually take you on property but it sounds like a fun day.

Last show I saw was Rock of Ages...same basic story line as the movie but without Tom Cruise...so it was better just because of that. Cast was very interactive with the audience and the music was pretty good. Mostly 80's stuff integrated into a musical. Atmosphere was made to feel like a rock concert...beer vendors and all.

I didn't know Zion was that close, but that's def worth seeing if so and

what a great counterpoint to Vegas. Red Rock Canyon is a nice close diversion. I like Fremont St better than the Strip, and cheaper games too. If you're not big into games, head to the sports books and bet on games. Even if you lose, it's a lot slower than at tables and it's like being in a sports bar with more TVs. Sports are great to watch on west coast time too!

If you like the Beatles

The Cirque du Soleil show Love is very good. Battista's Italian is a fun restaurant.

Beatles Love show is awesome. Also recommend seeing it before you see any of the other Cirque shows because it's less circus type acts and more musical. I think seeing Mystere and KA first may leave some people disappointed in Love and some of the more musical shows.

yeah, that seems good. I've seen Cirque de Soleil shows in Orlando

but the Vegas ones seem awesome

We've seen most of them.

Ka at the MGM is probably my favorite, with Love (Beatles) or Mystere at Treasure Island(?) in the mix. I didn't think O lived up to expectations although it's very different from the others.

Edit: Just saw where IUSUMMERS posted about Ka and Mystere as well.

Anybody putting you up at the Golden Nugget doesn't really want you to come

X

LOL

That's kind of what I thought at first too, but his story about it being close to downtown and the courthouse makes sense.

Two weeks at the Nugget would be a loooooong two weeks.

The Nugget is not that bad since the remodel. I actually like gambling downtown better than the strip.
