Over the summer everyone was talking about how much everyone hoped Camion Patrick would impact the offense. There were those who despite history thought the freshmen wideouts would be Jerry Rice. As the season started, FINITE MATH claimed Patrick and Jones had a great non-conference start to the year. Cobbs dropped one pass in three and questions arose about the passing game.
As the season wore on and Nate and Jordan were hurt, the passing game started to resemble the one that we watched last yr.
But in the critical part of the season, from Michigan on to the Pinstripe bowl, IU "found" Andre Booker. Andre was a walk-on who earned a scholarship a year ago and went back on walk-on status this season. But down the stretch, Booker gave IU a crucial and critical vital deep threat. WITHOUT the most egregious offensive pass interference penalty vs Michigan (Dear Mr. Delaney. Can IU's secondary repeatedly hold and interfere like Michigan's does? ONCE?) Booker provided a legit DEEP threat that came through at a time when it was crucial for the team. HATS OFF!!!. Not against Southern Illinois. Not against WKU. But against Maryland and Purdue when IU needed a jump start and to stay in the hunt for a bowl. Cobbs also came on late in the year. He ran better patterns and caught more passes than he dropped.
A year from now. What does IU do at wideout? It will be fashionable to talk about Cobbs "being a beast" next yr and he might. But it's not automatic and much work will have to be done between now and then for that to happen. I sure hope it does. Patrick is reportedly terrific. But is he a WR or a RB (if Howard leaves for the NFL). If Howard leaves, IU has a big hole at RB for someone to fill. If Patrick is that guy, that leaves a huge void at WR Nick Westbrook has shown a lot of potential. Thornton has looked good at corner. After that ?????? A lot of bodies. Some hurt. Some haven't seen the field.
One of the cool things about recruiting is you get a glimpse of how the coaches want to take the team. Kudos to Andre Booker for his growth and contribution to IU football 2015
