Let's have a little fun headed toward the weekend. Give us 5-10 of your favorite songs of All Time. With the number of music fans on this Forum and age differences this should be interesting. Here are mine.
1. Despersdo - Don Henley/Eagles
2. Running On Empty- Jackson Browne
3. Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For- U2
4. Maggie May - Rod Stewart
5. Layla - Derek & The Dominoes (Some of the greatest Guitar Work of All Time with Eric Clapton
(and Duane Allman)
6. Lying Eyes - The Eagles
7. I Wish It Would Rain - Temptations
8. Brown Eyed Girl - Van Morrison (With "Wild Night" a close Second)
9. Shout - Isley Brothers (Who can forget the Toga Party Scene with "Otis Day and the Nights")
10. The Loadout/Stay - Jackson Browne ( The live version as the last cut on The Running On Empty
(Album is the first time they performed it in public).

Obviously heavy on the Eagles/Jackson Browne component, which probably gives away my age.
Let's have your list.

When you're 65 and have been listening to music for at least 50 yrs, "favorite songs" can be an elusive concept. But I was blown away when I first heard this song, and it still gives me chills...

The only reason this is my #2, is because he hadn't yet written Racing. According to the NYT, this song was requested/played at more graveside services for victims of 9-11 than any other song. It's definitely one of the songs I want played at whatever final ceremony that awaits me. Probably not this version from No Nukes- although it is one of my personal faves...

This isn't # 3 on my Bruce list. But I did love this song the first time I heard it. And this version contains one of my favorite lyrical references...The sequel to Thunder Road, but left off of the Darkness album and not officially released till decades later...

I followed that dream through the southwestern tracks
The dead ends and the two-bit bars
When The promise was broken, I was far away from home
Sleeping in the back seat of a borrowed car

Thunder Road for the lost lovers and all the fixed games
Thunder Road for the tires rushing by in the rain
Thunder Road remember what me and Billy we'd always say
Thunder Road, we were gonna take it all and throw it all away

I really love a lot of early (first 3 albums) Jackson Browne. I love some of the covers of this (particularly Gregg Allman), but Jackson wrote it when he was 16 and playing with the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band. So this is the version that most resonates with me...

So many JB songs to choose from, but I'll go with From Silver Lake because of the lyrics, melody and counter-melody (Crosby/Nash on backing vocals). Same elements that have always caused me to love Father and Son by Cat Stevens...

When Springsteen inducted JB into the RRHOF he specifically used this song as an example of lyrical brilliance and even noted the car doors slamming and the engine revving as the car drives away. This song grabs me lyrically from the outset...

Everyone I've ever known has wished me well
Anyway that's how it seems, it's hard to tell
Maybe people only ask you how you're doing
'Cause that's easier than letting on how little they could care
But when you know that you've got a real friend somewhere
Suddenly all the others are so much easier to bear

Now to see things clear it's hard enough I know
While you're waiting for reality to show
Without dreaming of the perfect love
And holding it so far above
If you stumbled onto someone real, you'd never know
(You'd never know)
You could be with somebody who is lonely too
(Sometimes it doesn't show)
He might be trying to get across to you
(Words can be so slow)

When your own emptiness is all that's getting through
There comes a point when you're not sure why you're still talking
I passed that point long ago
(Long ago)

I'm so tired of all this circling
And all these glimpses of the end
(You know it's useless to pretend)
That's all the voices say:

"You'll go right on circling
Until you've found some kind of friend"

Simple music that makes me smile. By way of "Cool hand Luke"

What's interesting is that almost 98% of the favourite singers/bands are men -- with men singing about loneliness/broken hearts, sex and partying.

What would be really interesting is what the few women here and what their of fav songs are.
