Age as a concern for new coach

Count me among those who want a coach who, if all goes well, will be in Bloomington for a solid 15 years while winning at a high level. In order to achieve that, a coach needs to have the energy and stamina to travel for recruiting, participate in practices, schmooze with donors and consistently hold court with the media.

I simply do not believe John Beilein, Mike Woodson or Rick Pitino are qualified for the job due to their age (among other things).

Here are the ages of a handful of head coaches when they took over at their current programs:

- Roy Williams: 53
- Mark Few: 37
- Tom Izzo: 40
- Dana Altman: 52
- Bill Self: 41
- Brad Underwood: 54
- Chris Holtmann: 46
- John Calipari: 50
- Nate Oats: 45
- Will Wade: 35
- Bruce Weber: 56
- Cuonzo Martin: 46
- Mick Cronin: 48
- Bob Huggins: 54
- Wayne Tinkle: 48

Among those coaches, the oldest at the time of hire was Bruce Weber being 56 when he arrived at Kansas State.

I definitely wouldn't take anyone over 55 unless they were a sure fire winner and not a system coach. Someone like Sampson or Pitino. Beilein is a system coach and would in the home before he starts to win if ever.
