Maryland baseball: No. 20 Terps host Hoosiers in final home series of 2015
By Andrew A Kramer@mercator88 on Apr 30, 2015, 4:00p
Maryland is in the thick of a hotly contested race for the B1G crown. Indiana is just hoping to have a winning season. The two teams will meet this weekend for Maryland's final home weekend series.

The Hoosiers were dominant in 2014
Indiana had an incredible season last year. They won the B1G regular season crown by going 21-3 in conference, 38-13 overall. The Hoosiers also won the B1G Tournament, received a No. 4 national seed, and hosted a Regional round in the NCAA Tournament. They won the first two games in that Regional, and were one win away from hosting a Super Regional. Unfortunately the Hoosiers dropped two straight to Stanford, the last one being a 5-4 heart breaker that ended their season on a sour note. Not long after that head Coach Tracy Smith bolted for the position at Arizona State, and the MLB draft claimed a number of prominent players.

What a difference a (half) season makes
So with a new head coach, Chris Lemonis, and having to start somewhat from scratch, Indiana was an unknown commodity at the start of the 2015 season. Things started off on a good note, as the Hoosiers took two out of three from last year's spoiler, Stanford. After a couple of embarrassing losses, the Hoosiers went on to take 13 of their next 14 games, including a sweep of Cal State Fullerton. There was talk of Indiana being much better than anyone thought.

Things fell apart quickly. The Hoosiers went on to drop 14 of their next 21 games. What was particularly vexing to Hoosier fans is that the team would beat heavyweights like Louisville and Notre Dame, but then drop home-and-home series with in-state foes Indiana State and Evansville. At this point, barring a B1G Tournament title the Hoosiers will not be going to the post-season.

Statistically, the Hoosiers look a lot like Maryland. As with the Terrapins, Indiana's bats have cooled off considerably from where they were earlier in the season. But where the two teams diverge is in the direction their pitching staffs have taken. Indiana has fallen off in that regard while the Terps have shored up their early-season pitching problems. Another key statistic is that the Hoosiers are 5-11 in away games; the Terps have a 10-6 road record.

Sunday will be Senior Day. Prior to the game's start, the Terrapins will be honoring RHP Bobby Ruse and LF Tim Lewis.
