I did a quick once-over on Idaho and here's what I got. Not meant to be comprehensive just kind of a snapshot.

The Idaho Vandals became a Division I school (now FBS) in 1996 and competed in the Big West, Sun Belt and WAC respectively (and also as an Independent) until moving back to FCS in 2018 when they re-joined the Big Sky Conference. During their time in FBS / Division I Idaho won three bowl games – the 1998 Humanitarian Bowl, the 2009 Humanitarian Bowl and the 2016 Famous Idaho Potato Bowl.

The Vandals (official colors silver and vandal gold) participated in 11 I-AA playoffs from 1982 to 1995 and made Semifinal appearances in 1988 and 1993. They won the Big Sky Conference 9 times from 1965 to 1992 and also won the Pacific Coast Conference in 1927 and the Big West in 1998.

Their overall record as a program is 460-614-26 which is fairly similar to Indiana's overall mark of 494-683-44.

Idaho's Head Coach is Paul Petrino (yes the brother of Bobby Petrino, currently at Missouri State). Petrino has been at Idaho since 2013 and has an overall coaching record of 30-59. Petrino won the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl in 2016 and was also the Sun Belt Coach of the Year that same season.

Last week Idaho beat Simon Fraser 68-0 which was the Vandals' first shutout since 2010.

Players to watch

Inside Linebacker Tre Walker is the Preseason Big Sky Conference Defensive Player of the Year. This Spring Walker had 54 tackles in only four games, which is 13.5 tackles per game.

Fullback / Tight End Logan Kendall is Preseason All-Big Sky First Team All Conference. This kid is a load who can run, block and catch.

Cornerback Jalen Hoover was All-Big Sky Second Team last Spring and he plays Nickleback too.

Sophomore Nick Romano was All-Big Sky Second Team last Spring as a Kick Returner.

Senior Safety Tyrese Dedmon was All-Big Sky Second Team last Spring.

Offensive Lineman Logan Floyd was All-Big Sky Second Team last Spring. He seems to be a more natural Tackle but he can also play Center if needed.

Hayden Hatten is their best weapon at Wide Receiver. This Spring he had 43 receptions for 613 yards and three touchdowns and he was also the Vandals' leading receiver in Week 1 with two catches for 106 yards and a Touchdown.

The quarterback position seems a bit tumultuous as Idaho used four QBs last Spring. Week 1 saw split time between C.J. Jordan and Mike Beaudry. As far as I am able to tell they are taking a quarterback by committee approach in 2021.

Defensive Tackle Noah Elliss is a player to watch. He's 6'4” 367 lbs but was actually quite productive for Idaho in Week 1.

Idaho's Offensive Line has some good size but they are young and Indiana's defensive front may have an opportunity to be quite disruptive come Saturday night.

Looks like Mellancamp with bleachers 😉 (The Kibbie Dome).

I'd expect the unexpected with Petrino.

I expect a dominating performance by IU on both sides of the ball. IU 41-10. And I wouldn't mind if we ran it up even more, as Idaho did to their opponent last week.

So the Bobby Petrino Offense is 'Mulitple', and amalgamation of several different schemes he picked up on over the years. I've seen it described as complex and hard on quarterbacks. As stated above they use two quarterbacks and in the words of CTA they do a great job of putting the defense in conflict.

We should see one back spead formations but also some 21 and 22 looks as well. I think they use that Kendall kid as an H-back or sort of a fullback - tight end hybrid. (CTA confirmed this yesterday.) Back in 2013 Petrino said he emphasizes the run in the 4th quarter.

Mike Breske is the Defensive Coordinator for Idaho. He was hired in 2015 and was the DC under Mike Leach at Washington State in the three seasons before that. According to this site he runs a 3-4 which explains the oversized nosetackle I mentioned yesterday. The DE plays a 3 technique over the offensive guard and they use a standing pass rusher they call their Buck LB on the edge much of the time. Allen described Idaho kids as "tough" and stated that "they play extremely hard". I'm sure that's true but we also know this is coach speak when playing a quite inferior opponent.

Notes:

Out
Devon Matthews and Jaylin Williams

In
CTA described Christopher Keys as 'the next man up' in the Hoosier secondary and should see a lot of snaps Saturday in the absense of Matthews and Williams.
Luke Haggard will start, not clear if he'll replace Matthew Bedford or Caleb Jones. (My guess is Jones but TV guy said Bedford.)
David Ellis will play.

Idaho had a 9-4 bowl season in 2016. They've gone 15-26 since, including 2-4 in the spring season (because of Covid) they played earlier this year, and have dropped down to the FCS. If we don't crush this team, we have big problems. But I expect that it will be a blowout.

Does Jalen Hoover only play the hits, or does he celebrate the entire Nickleback catalogue? Lolz
