A guide for all the New Yorkers and Silicon Valley folks moving to So. Florida

I had forgotten Dave Barry was still around.

this just mentions obnoxious Nyers who have been infesting SoFla for years. I’m sure it’s gotten much worse but that’s why the West Coast is the best. I’d always prefer it to Delray, West Palm, etc

W Coast is definitely a difft vibe than the "Sixth Borough."

Gulf side for sure. Better beaches. Better fishing. Better beer.
Where does the world's most unusual, most non-responsive local government get assigned, i.e. Atlantic or gulf?

As folks here on the east coast call the Gulf...the big puddle...does have better beaches except when they are littered with dead fish and stench.

Gulf side is picking up a lot of NYers these days.

What many of us say to NY/NJ/CT people who come down here...Remember you are a refugee, not a missionary.
Yeah the housing market on the gulf looks as bad as the East Coast. I assumed they're NYers

They're probably all voting for people like Nikki Fried too. Leave a state like NY, NJ, CA, etc because the Democrats ruined it but then keep voting Dem in your new state. Liberal logic.

DeSantis is raking in the cash. I don't think a Dem Fla gov would be anything but moderate tho. Crist would keep no state income tax and many of the Fla staples. They are going to have to address some environmental issues down there sooner than later. Beaches. Too many people etc. Florida is exploding and that's not always good

Plenty of Chicagoans and other Midwesterners
It has always been Midwesterners as they travel down 75 as kids and east coasters on the Atlantic side as they travel down 95. sadly, for the gulf side the east coasters have discovered the better half and will change the "friendly" "laid back" nature of the area.

The worst thing they do is change the price. I wonder how developed north of Jupiter has gotten. Vero. Stuart. Etc.

They (in general) are obnoxious, loud and entitled. The price as well. We went from Boca to Juno and the prices have changed but it was a wash for us.

Amen to that... and you can spot them in Publix - they're the ones with the masks and gloves STILL ON. Just last week saw a guy picking produce with gloves, mask and goggles on. Pretty creepy, frankly.
I live on the east coast of FL. It's 60% east coast "refugees", 25% mid west and 5% all other where I'm at. I'm grateful for the chill and laid back vibe where I am (north of Daytona). After years in the midwest (Indy, Cincy, Chicago) I absolutely love it here. Housing market through the roof, very limited inventory of houses or condo's for sale. Lot's of folks doubling their money on homes in the $500-$1.5M range in just 4-5 years. Crazy. Preparing for all kinds of tax assessments to build more schools and expand roads and infrastructure. North of me in St Augustine, the building and development is through the roof. Thousands of single family homes under construction. Florida is great, but will be bursting at the seams shortly.

I haven't spent much time up there. I thought it was super red necky. No offense. Am I wrong?

Depends on where you go. Most towns in Florida have a bit of redneck vibe; some more, some less. Nothing wrong with it. Usually just good, simple people trying to keep their lives simple too. Usually west of 95. East of 95 is more transplanted Floridians, more recent development. From Daytona north to St Augustine, there's probably 40 golf courses, great fishing (inter coastal and ocean) and lots of small towns/neighborhoods to explore. We like the three seasons too, with our winters being in the 45-50 degree range in Jan and Feb. Cooler springs (60''s-70's) and manageable summers (80-low 90's vs 100's further south).

Got it! I haven't been to St Augustine or Jacksonville area in 20 years

Tampa to Orlando on I-4 has minimal development. Maybe the normal people can settle there by the time I’m ready to move down there. About 20 years to go. Haha.

The population of Fla is over 21 million and will soon be more than 25 to 30 million. Nothing laid back about that on either coast.

On my way to Anna Maria now. First stop Publix for a key lime pie, next stop my favorite fish joint for a grouper sandwich and a beer.

My parents spent a month there this winter for first time and loved it. They have a place in Destin, but too cold there for them in winter.....so they have taken to wintering from their winter place.

That's hell on Earth in the summer though. Central Fla, "rural" central Fla is brutal in the summer

Yep. My inlaws have a condo on Estero Island.... and are there from New Years until April. Traffic on/ off that island in-season is ridiculous.... I don't care to even go then. We go use it in October and it's actually laid back, then.

Passed NY in population last year. It's having all sorts of impacts from water issues to making UF harder and harder to get accepted. Fla in state tuition is ridiculously cheap

Aren’t certain public universities almost free tuition? We almost pulled the trigger when we had 2 small kids but stupid conservative me was nervous about finding as good of a job as I have up here. Totally regret it today.
