Finding the new option of a weekend a the Garden City Bed and Breakfrast Deluxe, listening to the hum and racket of the freight train, with WHUM radio always on, and a trip to the Bloomington in a long, long day, the spirit of Booker had a great time. Most enjoyable was the Garden City Estate of Eddie and the lovely wife, with the pool and hot tub:
Thanks Eddie. And the 30 pack of Strohs made the evening.
After breakfast at Garden City's Musillami's Garden City Bistro, the trek to Bloomington began, with the cold front bringing light showers. Wow!! Stop and Brown County Winery. Nice. Hop to Bear Wallow for the shine, pefect for the tailgate:
and continue west. Wait!! Jump North Brummets Creek for a stop at Butler winery to be entertained by a Doctorate Student in Composition, Music, for a fine hour with their unique Indiana wines. Mr Oliver started a new industry where noboby thought he could, and his progeny are doing well.
Into Bloomington. Dunn. Good walk to the Union, and a new sweathshirt for the wife, who thinks the weather foreboding. Grab some food at Scholars and head to the woods. Immediate congeniality from four old alum from the Fort; they believe a win is inevitable. For the glory of true love!!! And the rain pours, with little deterrent to the student party just beginning. After the rain, it is al coolness and comfort. Wine to drink, a fine white Chardonel. And a walk in the woods. The joy of young matriculants, free from parents. The buzz expands. Don't build in the woods, please, university.
Over to the alumni section, aka, no fun. Very moderate crowd, with athletic department events, all ignored. Note to memory: do not let Fred Glass plan my party. The mellow crowd sits and enjoys. A good time is had by all. Into the stadium, the pretty inside, but it is a stadium without an entrance. Every building needs to invite you to enter: the greatest problem with the Rock is that it doesn't. There is now "people gatherer." There is no entrance. It is not inviting. And the plans to modify the currently horrific north end may not fix this. It could be a classic: a plaza from the north end to 17th, with a grand court to enter the Rock. Oh well.
The large scoreboard grabs attention, but it is hard to read. What is the score of other games? What are the stats? Terrible. Terrible.
And others have bemoaned the loss of the White Buffalo opening. It was kitsch, but enjoyable and professional and ours. It said IU and football. And now it is gone, for a hip hop routine. Fred, Fred, Fred. When you get something right, why throw it away. Fred. What a disappointment.
Others have pointed to the faded field. Yep. It is almost time. But, ok, not bad. IU looks good as they run onto the field. Spirited. Half full stands? Guess today's society would rather sit at home and watch NCIS reruns. Ziva is cute.
Game begins and the Golden Panthers look cocky. Offense looks in control, but settles for 3. Overall, the offensive and defensive line controls the game. The young defense makes some plays, and begins to like being on the field. Most important, FIU begins moving with a three step drop quick pass and an open slot receiver. As the half goes on, the defense adjusts and takes the quick drop away. Hmmm. A successful defensive adjustment.
The offense enjoys grinding with Mr Howard and Mr Devine. Some blocking would have lead to home runs for Mr Coleman, but, ahhh, those days have passed. This year is the year of not losing yards. FIU begs to be beaten long, but there was no need to press yet, and the new receivers are not really ready. Look, a big pass down field to Cosaro!!! We will miss Mr Sudfeld's arm, but mostly his vision. Halftime. Should be a ten point lead, but the team is behind.
The band. Sounds great, but, well, no energy, no fun. Nothing new. Hey!!! It's 1968 again. Remember Sargeant Pepper?
Second half, more physical control. Coach Turner looks to throw at the diminutive Fant, but he battles, and battles. He and his running mate press. Wow. Even the db formerly known as a running back gets in. Ooops. He will learn. There are just more athletes out there. Young athletes.
IU wins, actually with ease, and the score should have been bigger. But, they made a big step.
Are they ready for WKU? More than last week, and Mr Scales and Mr Dutra cannot hurt, can they? Can they be patient with giving up some yards? The WKU qb is talented: Much better than FIU's. And some really good receivers. Coach will have to turn Mr Sudfeld loose, and the young receivers, Mr Cobbs and Mr Jones, need to be consistent. Every play. Stax up boys. Time is tight.
Later. After midnight. Well, with all the fans leaving it is an easy haul out of the woods. Let's trip down 45. Hallucinogenic. Deer flash by. Fox on the road. Slip into Gnaw Bone for a quick tipple at the Violet Hour, Gnaw Bone. Season Summary cocktail so far: So Far, So Good
Letherbee, Lemon, Cherry Heering, J.P. Chenet Sparkling, Orange Flower Water
Garden City Bed and Breakfast and Bistro. Border collies and bagpipes on Sunday. and off to the Alexander for some comfort.
A good time was had; season still on edge.
